Maidenhead United Women’s inspirational and much-loved club captain Amy Saunders has announced that she will leave the club at the end of the 2024/25 season, her 17th season in a remarkable playing career which has lasted as long as the team itself has.

38 year-old Saunders was part of the inaugural group of ‘Maidenhead United Ladies’ which formed in 2008 and the much-decorated player enjoyed success with her team mates in their very first season, picking up the Southern Regional Women’s Football League Division 1 title in 2008/09. Saunders has since picked up medals for winning the SRWFL Premier Division in 2014/15 and has also been part of the MUWFC sides which have lifted the likes of the North Hants Cup and the Combined Counties League Women’s Cup.

Amy has represented the MUWFC first team in more than 300 competitive matches and has captained the club with distinction over the past few season. Head of Women’s Football Tanya Davis-Hussain paid tribute to Saunders: “The word Legend is thrown about too easy these days but to me and Maidenhead United, Amy Saunders is the true epitome of that. Not too many will know, but there would be no team, no Maidenhead United Women without her and her passion, commitment, fight and drive is what makes us what we are today. We owe you everything and you will live on in this club for many years to come.”

Saunders will be part of the Magpies squad for their final FA Women’s National League fixture of the season at York Road on Sunday 27th April when they entertain Worthing in a 2pm kick off. Admission is FREE for MUFC Gold Members, otherwise £5 for adults and £2 for concession. All Maidenhead United supporters are warmly welcome down at York Road to pay tribute to Amy and to enjoy a drink in the bar with her and her team mates at the end of another hugely successful season for football at MUWFC as the curtain finally comes down on her exemplary playing time at York Road.
