Two of Maidenhead United’s women’s walking football players have been selected for the International Walking Football Federation (IWFF) England over 60's squad.

Following a trial over the summer, Debs Smirfitt (pictured, left), who also coaches and manages United’s women’s walking football teams, and Lin Wilson will be joining the England squad.

Debs will be playing in the Winter Nations league this week in Birmingham, while Lin will be eligible later in the year. Both are looking forward to the IWFF World Championship next June.

“Having loved football all my life, I thought my playing days were long behind me. Then I tried walking football at MUFC, and all the joy and team spirit came flooding back,” said Lin. “A huge thank you to Debs for her brilliant support and coaching, and also the club for enabling plenty of opportunities to play for all.

“To be in the England squad is such a thrill!"

Following her call-up, Debs said she was “very proud to represent the country”.

"Walking football is a great way to keep moving, socially connected, and has so many health benefits especially for women of all ages,” she added. “Plenty of our players have never played football before so it's definitely for everyone.”

The Magpies’ women’s walking football league campaign gets underway this Sunday at Bisham Abbey from 10am. Training is thrice a week, and all are welcome to attend.
