Katie Craves Home Comforts as United Women Return to York Road
Posted on 2nd November 2024
Maidenhead United Women are back on the turf at York Road on Sunday afternoon (3rd November) in a key game against local rivals Abingdon United in the FAWNL Division 1 South West. Kick off will be at 2pm, Stripes Bar will be open as will Tea Bar 1. Admission is FREE for MUFC Gold Members, £5 for adults, £2 concessions.
Midfielder Katie Akerman is looking forward to Maidenhead being at home for the first time in a month. The former Reading FC Academy player – also previously with Watford – joined the Magpies from Tier 4 rivals QPR this summer and admits that home advantage could be key for the Magpies against an Abingdon side who Maidenhead are yet to beat in league or cup since the Oxfordshire side’s promotion to the FAWNL in 2023.
Katie told us: “The support we get at home with the crowd and mascots urging us on is immense. It really drives you and reminds you that people have your back!
“I have to give a personal shoutout to Mumzy, never missing a game since I started playing about 5 years old. My biggest supporter and I owe it all to her. The hours she has dedicated driving me around the country, I would never have got here today without her. Then there is my brother and boyfriend also come to watch!
“I heard a lot about the club and its drive to move up. I came down for training and yeah I felt right at home. The club’s togetherness is something I’ve never seen before. The girls have made me feel so welcome and the coaches have too.”
The tenacious midfielder jokes that her strengths are “my ability to get yellow cards!” before adding more seriously: “I’d say my passing range (is my strength), to be able to split defensive units. And my strength for someone so little.”
Looking ahead to what promises to be a hard-fought, tight game the Magpies have been in good, goal-scoring form recently and Katie added “some of the most recent results show our talent and drive to do well.” Katie and her team mates will be looking to put on a good show for family, friends and spectators on Sunday and your support would be much appreciated.
