Magpies Development Make Plate Progress
Posted on 6th December 2024
It was another dramatic cup-tie for Maidenhead United Women Development last Sunday afternoon as Ryan Robinson’s young team hit back to stun Billericay Town Reserves on penalties and secure a second cup semi-final spot for the season. In 2025, the team now have the FAWNL Reserve Plate semi-final and a tie in the last four of the Berks & Bucks Sunday Trophy to look forward to.
After the dust settled on the delirious celebrations, captain Chloe Matmuja reflected on another remarkable afternoon.
“In the first half Billericay clearly wanted it more than us. We struggled on our reactions to quick transitions causing us to go 2-0 down. At half time we identified what we were doing wrong and took that into the second half” Chloe admitted. “The second half was unbelievable, each one of the girls took what we said and implemented it into the second half. Everyone’s work rate and desire to win the ball back allowed us stay in the game. Both goals were from our corner set pieces; the first one was from me scoring directly from the corner and the second was a corner crossed in by Ava (Broke Smith) and Ines (Cipriano) getting a header to it” she added.
United then kept their composure in the shootout. Eighteen penalty kicks were required as United won through 8-7. They will now visit Stoke City Development in the semi-final in January.
Meanwhile, the MUWFC First Team are back in action on Sunday 8th December as they welcome high-flying Moneyfields to York Road in FAWNL Division 1 South West, looking to bounce back from last weekend’s 3-1 defeat at Worthing. Admission for this 2pm kick off is FREE to MUFC Gold Members, otherwise £5 for adults and £2 for concessions. The Development team entertain divisional leaders Watford at Cox Green Leisure Centre (2pm).
