Maidenhead United’s pre-match preparations were perfected with poetry on Saturday, 7th March, as part of the Maidenhead’s Big Read festival.

Ryan Peters’ Magpies took time to visit Maidenhead Library prior to the 2-1 win over Maidstone United, with a half-hour session hosted by acclaimed poet Simon Mole.

Simon, who recently released his latest book, Poetry Pizza, began by reading a poem before handing over to Manny Onaraise. Asher Yearwood, Matt Robinson, and Will de Havilland also performed football-themed poems.

Players from Maidenhead United Juniors U11 Lions also joined in the fun, taking on the men’s first team in a synonym challenge for different words and phrases to scoring a goal (won by Yearwood representing the men!).
Before they set off for York Road, the players signed shirts belonging to the Juniors, with time for a group photo with the team.

Diane Flood, an organiser of Maidenhead’s Big Read, said: “We were absolutely delighted by the players' guest appearance.

“They were a hugely popular addition to our programme this year, helping us to promote the joy of reading to a wider audience.”
