Chesham United vs Maidenhead United

Match Preview

We’re back in league action and bound for Buckinghamshire as we face up against Chesham United.

A league fixture that broke six years without face off opened last campaign when The Generals arrived in Berkshire. It was far from the start Dev’s side would have wanted on the return to the National League South, as the visitors took all three points. Alfie Young bundled the ball home after 25 minutes, before Josh Umerah drew United level with 18 to go. Liam Dulson drove down the left flank before drilling across the six-yard box where Umerah arrived to slide into the far corner. Callum Adebiyi won it late on as he smashed in a corner that went undealt with as we entered the closing stages. The reverse, and more recent fixture, had Adebiyi at the centre of attention with his controversial late dismissal for a kick out in the corner. Once again Chesham took the lead on the day, this time through Mitchell Weiss just before the interval as he got a toe on Josh Addae’s initial effort. Liam Dulson again proved pivotal as he equalised with 20 minutes remaining, smashing into the bottom left corner following Josh Popoola’s short set back.

In only their second season at Step 2 level, Chesham punched well into the play-off pack for large parts of the season but would ultimately settle for 11th and four points shy. Joint Managers James Duncan and Michael Murray have recruited systematically over the summer, starting with getting goals through the door with Craig Fasanmade and Hisham Kasimu bolstering their forward line. Depth has been added with some exciting arrivals from divisions below including local lad Harry Hoath, along with young talent from the leagues above like Aaron Lacey, Joe Andrews and Dubem Eze. The last of which, Eze, come into the game off the back of a hat-trick in the FA Cup against Ware FC which adds to his two league goals at the end of August.

Swapping between Berkshire and Buckinghamshire is a fairly common thing for players to have done, and even some of our current MUWFC players have done the same. For this week’s played for both it’s the man who did it last campaign in Kai Yearn. The young midfielder started the season with The Magpies making 12 appearances and scoring just the once; a peach of an effort against Winslow United in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup. Following his recall to Coventry City in January, he made the immediate switch to The Generals. He quickly found his goalscoring touch at The Meadow scoring nine in 19 league games, including all four in a 4-2 against Maidstone United. Following his release from Coventry in the summer, Yearn joined up with National League North side Brackley Town and made an immediate impact with a tidy volley on the opening day against AFC Telford United.

The man to watch is summer arrival Hisham Kasimu who has started the season in fine form with five goals in his opening nine league games. Proving a threat inside the area, the French forward looks well on track to better his tally of eleven from last season across spells with Totton and Gosport Borough. His most prolific season came with The Stags in the 2021/22 season where he hit 30 goals in the Southern Premier Division South and in the club’s first Southampton Senior Cup in four decades.

Our famous face from Chesham, and heavily involved in the club, is comedian Alex Horne. His most notable work comes as the creator of comedy game show Taskmaster in 2009 before teaming up with Greg Davies in 2015; the show has gone on to do 227 shows across the 11-year period. He has also featured in shows like Celebrity Mastermind, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and The Great Celebrity Bake Off for SU2C. Living locally, Horne became a director at The Generals in 2022 and managed to get Taskmaster to be featured as front-of-shirt sponsor – a move that drastically increased sales and revenue for the club.

Stay on the A40 for a mile and a half, at the London End roundabout take the 1st exit onto Park Lane. Continue to practically follow that road in a straight line before going either way round the Tesco Superstore you meet at the roundabout at the end of the road.
