Back in Berkshire on Saturday as we welcome our Hampshire guests in Farnborough. 

 

Boro provide a stern test for United in every historic clash between the two and that is no different under Spencer Day. Last season, we took just a singular point off of Saturday’s opposition in a 2-2 draw at York Road. Liam Dulson and Josh Umerah looked to have United cruising but Mason Bloomfield and Billy Clifford hit back in the closing half hour. The game earlier in the season in Hampshire was a frustrating one as Dom Poleon’s 74th minute goal was enough for three points despite 16 shots from United. 

 

Farnborough, like many in the league, have been incredibly active in recruitment with 20 through the door since the conclusion of last campaign. A familiar face in Sam Barratt was the first through the door followed by the likes of Rashawn Scott, Tom Lapslie and Tyler Frost to name a few. A near on complete overhaul of the squad from last campaign, Lapslie brings a wealth of experience to the squad having spent seven years in the football league with Colchester United before joining Torquay, Chelmsford and then Boro. Frost is a further exciting addition having come through at Reading before earning football league experience at Crawley Town with spells at Harrogate and Aldershot Town paving his path to Hampshire. 

 

The obvious inclusion for played for both this week is Sam Barratt. The Berkshire legend made 352 appearances for Maidenhead before his departure in the summer, scoring 55 goals in that time – a tally which contributes to him being the club’s record scorer at National League level. Even in the early stages of his time in Hampshire, Barratt has been a mainstay in the Farnborough eleven starting two of the three games so far this season. His inch-perfect cross for Mason Bloomfield gave Farnborough their opener on opening day against Maidstone United in a 2-1 victory on the road. 

 

The one to watch for Farnborough is young striker Michael Reindorf. Coming through at West Ham, Leyton Orient and Norwich City, he had his first taste of senior football on loan at Kettering Town in 2024 – making 12 appearances and scoring twice. His release from Norwich that summer led him to Cardiff City where he made his EFL Championship against Coventry City. Since then, he has had loan spells at Bristol Rovers, Newport County and Tamworth before joining Farnborough after a successful trial period this summer. He scored twice in pre-season against Cobham and took that into the season scoring the winner against The Stones on the opening day. 

 

A famous face from Farnborough, staying in sports, is former English cricketer Shaun Udal. An off-spin bowler who spent the large part of his career with his local side, Hampshire. He made his England ODI debut against New Zealand in 1994 and would go on to play a total of 11 ODIs. It took more than 10 years for Udal to get his chance in Test cricket, a decision that left many a cricket fan confused as to why it took so long. His noted career highlight came the following year in Mumbai, Udal took 4-14 in the second innings, including the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar as England cruised to victory by 212 runs. Shaun’s career as packed with moments that will live long in his memory; a 100%-win rate in Lords finals and narrowly avoiding the Mumbai terror attack in 2008 by just 24 hours. At the culmination of his career in 2010, Udal had made 771 professional appearances, 1,330 wickets and 11,279 runs.
