The situation is simple: Maidenhead United must win the last five games to maximise the chances of survival in the National League. 

 

Confidence will undoubtedly be high ahead of this weekend’s trip to Halifax following a 3-1 win over Tamworth on Saturday. Two from Shawn McCoulsky and a maiden goal for Joshua Johnson paved the way for an essential three points, and can form the basis of a run-in for the ages. 

 

The first of the last five comes at the Shay, and, on paper, is United’s toughest challenge with four of the bottom eight still to face. That said, 5th-placed Halifax have hit a slump in form with no wins in their last five. Their last home win was more than a month ago – perhaps unsurprising for a side which have amassed less points at home (29) than on the road (35). 

 

The two sides are fairly matched in the head-to-head table, and the Shay has borne witness to memorable encounters over the past 21 years for travelling Magpies. A 2-0 win in the FA Trophy back in 2004 is a fond memory for many, while United’s most recent win in this part of Yorkshire came back in 2023 when Ashley Nathaniel-George scored the only goal of the game in the 9th minute. 

 

The Shaymen took the three points in the reverse fixture last September, with Florent Hoti scoring the winning goal at York Road.
