Maidenhead United vs Torquay United

Match Preview

It’s lights, cameras, action this Tuesday night as we welcome Torquay United in front of the DAZN cameras.

Tests in the National League South rarely come much tougher than Torquay with last season being no different. The York Road fixture saw Liam Dulson’s late goal only prove to be consolation as Callum Dolan’s fine first half finish and Will de Havilland’s unfortunate own goal proved too steep of a mountain to climb. Our visit to Plainmoor was the more fruitful of the two last campaign as Josh Umerah’s dipping free-kick nine minutes into the second half secured a point, following Sonny Blu Lo-Everton’s opener the other side of the interval.

Following Jimmy Ball’s play-off final disappointment last time out, he has recruited strategically; looking to keep the bulk of his squad and replacing following player departures. Two exciting recruits came in ahead of their 3-2 victory against Folkestone Invicta on Saturday as Oludare Olufunwa and Angelo Cappello headed to Plainmoor. Both with some good pedigree in their early career, Cappello is a Belize international arrived from Halifax Town having made over 150 appearances for the National League club. Olufunwa boasts similar strong development having come through Southampton’s Academy before joining Liverpool in 2022. Since then, loan moves abroad to top-flight sides in Scotland, Finland and Jordan will have only aided his development.

There’s more than enough names to fit the bill of played for both, and Ashley Nathaniel-George is one of those. In a rather strange series of events, Nathaniel-George was signed by The Gulls in August of 2022 and would go on to appear on the opening day as a second-half substitute. However, that would be the only appearance he would make as just over a month later he arrived in Berkshire. He spent two years in black and white stripes and even earned Supporters’ Player of the Season in his debut campaign. The electric winger would earn 73 appearances for United and score 10 goals in that time. Following two seasons in and out of York City’s side, Nathaniel-George signed in the summer for newly-promoted Worthing.

The man to watch under the lights is another new arrival in Jacob Beaumont-Clark. A summer arrival from Everton, the 20-year-old winger arrives with plenty of excitement surrounding him. Prior to the move, Beaumont-Clark secured a handful professional minutes in the EFL Trophy – including a goal against Grimsby. He got off the mark on Saturday against The Seasiders with a beautiful curling effort into the far top corner. A performance that earned him a spot in the most recent National League South Team of the Week, alongside Remy Clerima.

Our famous face from Torquay is one of the best-selling novelists of all time Dame Agatha Christie MBE. Known as the ‘Queen of Crime’ (a nickname now trademarked by her estate), she wrote 66 detective novels and 14 short-story collections which would accumulate over 2 billions sales worldwide. Christie also wrote the world’s longest-running play, The Mousetrap, a murder mystery play performed in the West End since 1952 – reaching its 30,000th performance on 19th March 2025. During the First World War, Christie worked as a nurse in a hospital pharmacy in her home town of Torquay; her knowledge of medicine and poisons is said to have provided inspiration for many of her writings. In the late 1950s, Christie was reputedly earning around £100,000 a year (about £2 million in today’s money). Upon her untimely death, it was estimated she could have earned around £15 million which converted to today’s financial value is around £84 million.
