League football is back once again and in store for the opening weekend is our longest trip of the season down to Truro. 

 

The Tinners are not an unfamiliar opponent, despite having to go back just shy of 10 years for the last meeting. A 3-0 victory for the Magpies at Treyew Road was the final score that day, Sean Marks grabbed an early first-half double before Jordan Cox made it three with just under 20 to go. A clean sheet kept intact by Carl Pentney whose second-half penalty save took his tally to 19 clean sheets for the campaign. 

 

Saturday will be United’s first trip to Truro City’s new ground, the Truro City Stadium after Treyew Road was demolished in 2021 and replaced by a Lidl. The last game ever played there was between the Tinners and our previous pre-season opponents Wimborne Town – finishing 4-1 to Truro. 

 

John Askey has retained much of the squad he managed in last season’s National League campaign, only adding a handful of signings in recent weeks. There are a few names amongst that squad that may ring a bell for some United fans. 

 

The first of which being Zac Bell, the young fullback only made a couple of appearances for Maidenhead in 2024 before heading to the Tinners on loan for the remainder of 2024/25. A move which he would see made permanent in the summer, amassing 62 appearances and a singular goal (a late equaliser against Woking) across both spells. 

 

Another to don both shirts is Shaun Donnellan, the 29-year-old played two years under Alan Devonshire racking up 43 appearances and scoring three times. Featuring more predominantly in midfield for the Magpies, Donnellan has dropped back into the defensive line for the Tinners. Entering his second season on the south coast, he has so far accumulated 25 games and two goals – both of which came in 2-1 victories. 

 

The one to watch for the Tinners will leading the line, Tyler Harvey. The now 31-year-old found the net 27 times in their promotion campaign in 2024/25, winning both National League South Player of the Year and Golden Boot in the process. His role last season was far more withdrawn, scoring just five across all competitions. 

 

For the upcoming season we'll look at some 'Famous Faces' local to the matchday's opposition, and to kick us off we have Britain's most successful sailor - Sir Ben Ainslie. He is one of only three men to win medals in five different Olympic games in Sailing, securing silver in 1996 then gold in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012. To add to the tally, he has also won eleven World Championship titles and many other personal awards including MBE, OBE, CBE and a Knighthood for services to sailing and sport. Off the water, the £4 million Sir Ben Ainslie Sports Centre at Truro School was officially opened by sailor, and former pupil, Sir Ben Ainslie in October 2013. The sports centre boasts the claim of being 'Cornwall’s premier sports facility, boasting some of the best gym, swim and hire facilities in Cornwall'.

From Maidenhead Station travel into Reading from which you can board a direct train to Truro (heading to Penzance). From Truro Station you can either get on the Langarth Park Park and Ride service which will take you just shy of the Stadium (suggested option) or the 18 bus which will take you to Threemilestone Industrial Estate, about an eight minute walk from the Stadium. 

 

Car  

The suggested route by car is to take the M4 down to junction 20 to join onto the M5, heading south. At junction 31 of the M5 merge onto the A30 which will take you most of the way into Cornwall. At Chiverton Cross take the second exit onto the A390 and follow this until you reach teh Langarth Park & Ride. 

 

Parking is available on the Langarth Park & Ride site and it is FREE with space for 1,250 cars.
