AFC Totton vs Maidenhead United
Match Preview
To start a chaotic November schedule, we head south-west to The Snows Stadium and AFC Totton.
The two sides have never met before in a competitive fixture. Totton were promoted to the National League South last season, winning 1-0 against Gloucester City in the play-off final thanks to Ethan Taylor’s winner 15 minutes from time. Finally securing a spot in the sixth tier after narrowly missing out the season prior as they fell to defeat against Salisbury at the same stage in 2023/24.
Testwood, a sub area of Totton, draws plenty of intrigue with its historical background. The school in the area, Testwood School, was unable to open after its initial construction in 1939 due to the outbreak of the Second World War. Instead, it was commandeered by the Home Office and used as a headquarters for the National Fire Service. Just over 50 years later, Testwood Lakes were excavated to develop a new reservoir which uncovered some incredible historical artefacts. This included the remains of the earliest completed bridge in England, along with part of a boat dating back to the Middle Bronze Age (500 BC).
The Stags have enjoyed a very promising start to the season, fastening a spot in the early promotion-pushing pack. 25 points from the opening 13 fixtures sees them sat in third as we head into Matchweek 14. Wins against fellow play off hopefuls Hemel Hempstead, Weston super Mare and Horsham have only asserted more dominance on their current league standing. Striker Tony Lee is playing a big part in their strong start, topping the league’s scoring charts with eight goals. They come into the game off of FA Cup misery falling to an agonising but entertaining 6-3 defeat against Macclesfield, Lee grabbed a goal along with Scott Rendell’s double.
Maidenhead come into the game in a slump of form, off the back of four games without a win. Despite, only losing by one goal margins in all three of the defeats in that spell, it’s the drying up of goals at the other end that poses concern. Seven days prior to Tuesday night’s fixture, United suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Dorking Wanderers. Brennan Camp’s back post finish on 20 minutes was enough to see United go back to Berkshire empty-handed.
