Maidenhead United vs Bath City
Match Preview
This evening's match has been POSTPONED due to a waterlogged pitch.
Ryan Peters’ men will be looking to bounce back in the first of many February fixtures as they play host to Bath City.
The first meeting between the sides earlier in the season was one to remember for the travelling Mags faithful. United burst out the blocks as Jack Batten glanced Kane Ferdinand’s cross into his own goal before many supporters had taken their place in the terrace. Josh Popoola made it two, with what was his first for United, sliding in Jordon Ragguette’s ball into the corridor of uncertainty. Dulson made it three before the break as he broke forward and took the shot on his own, firing into the far corner. It would be Popoola again, to make it four, as he slotted home with ease from the edge of the area, followed suitably by a 20-minute rendition of “Mags away, a-ha, a-ha, I like it!”
A familiar face in both Berkshire and Bath is our current number five, Miles Welch-Hayes. The defender made 54 appearances for The Romans across two consecutive spells, first on loan before making the move permanent. He also scored three goals for City, all coming in his second spell in 2017-18. A spell with performances which earned him a spot in the Vanaram National League South Team of the Season. Showing his fondness for black and white kits, Miles made his way to Maidenhead in the summer of 2024. Arriving on an initial loan, his move was made permanent just over a year later. Across the last two season in SL6, Miles has made 51 appearances so far and scored twice playing at both centre-back and fullback.
Another to have featured in both sets of black and white is last season’s top scorer, Shawn McCoulsky. Shawn joined Bath City on loan in February of 2017 and enjoyed a rather prolific stay at Twerton Park. His eight goals in 14 games earned him a recall to his parent club, Bristol City with the potential of involvement in the Championship side’s closing games of the season. After some ventures in the EFL, the forward joined Maidenhead on an initial short-term deal until the end of the 2021-22 season, then earning himself a permanent deal and stayed until last summer. In 143 appearances for The Magpies, Shawn scored 32 goals including an impressive 16 in his final season in Berkshire.
A more historic player to have played for both, is Maidenhead legend Carl Pentney. The shot stopper joined City on an initial one-month loan as emergency cover for the injured ‘keeper. He made his debut just two days after signing and would have his loan extended by a further month, meaning he made a total on 13 appearances for the Somerset side. Carl arrived in Berkshire in 2015 and was as ever-present as you can get for the next three seasons. He played 148 consecutive league games for Alan Devonshire’s side, including the promotion season of 2017. Pents now takes up a position as Head of Academy Goalkeeping at Ipswich Town.
United come into the game off of a disappointing weekend result in Kent, falling to a 3-0 defeat at Ebbsfleet United. A strong first half and opening to the second left United rueing missed opportunities and The Fleet showed their clinical edge. Goals from Ronny Nelson, Dominic Samuel and Kwesi Appiah went without reply as the gap to playoffs grew to six points.
The Romans will be full of confidence entering Tuesday night’s encounter off the back of two strong results. Saturday saw them miss league football and partake in the Francis Hillier Premier Cup against Street FC. A 5-0 victory saw progress secured as Jordan Alves grabbed four goals along with Jordan Fisher’s header after half an hour. Their last league performance was just as strong seeing of the once league leaders Worthing by three goals to two. Will Jenkins-Davies’ early penalty and Matt Davies’ first half strike gave Bath breathing room. Teddy Jenks halved the deficit before Jenkins-Davies extended it again late on. Oliver Godziemski’s goal for Worthing in added time would then prove little more than a consolation.
