Maidenhead United vs Bath City

Match Preview

It’s straight back to York Road action as we host Bath City for some midweek action.

It was a joyous evening on the road when we travelled to Somerset in early September. A 4-0 victory made it three on the spin as two United scorers were boosted by an early own goal. Kane Ferdinand delivered early on looking for Josh Umerah, but Jack Batten got the telling touch, and the deadlock was broken after just a minute. Josh Popoola scored his first competitive United goal as he slid in an inch-perfect cross from Jordon Ragguette. It was three before the break as Liam Dulson broke forward, and used Umerah’s run as a dummy, before firing into the far bottom corner. Popoola grabbed his second and United’s fourth soon before the hour-mark, slotting home with ease following a skewed clearance. Jubilant scenes followed as chants of “Mags away, a-ha, a-ha, I like it!” saw United through to three points on the road.

A familiar face in both Berkshire and Bath is our current number five, Miles Welch-Hayes. The defender made 54 appearances for The Romans across two consecutive spells, first on loan before making the move permanent. He also scored three goals for City, all coming in his second spell in 2017-18. A spell with performances which earned him a spot in the Vanaram National League South Team of the Season. Showing his fondness for black and white kits, Miles made his way to Maidenhead in the summer of 2024. Arriving on an initial loan, his move was made permanent just over a year later. Across the last two seasons in SL6, Miles has made 58 appearances so far and scored twice playing at both centre-back and fullback.

Another to have featured in both sets of black and white is last season’s top scorer, Shawn McCoulsky. Shawn joined Bath City on loan in February of 2017 and enjoyed a rather prolific stay at Twerton Park. His eight goals in 14 games earned him a recall to his parent club, Bristol City with the potential of involvement in the Championship side’s closing games of the season. After some ventures in the EFL, the forward joined Maidenhead on an initial short-term deal until the end of the 2021-22 season, then earning himself a permanent deal and stayed until last summer. In 143 appearances for The Magpies, Shawn scored 32 goals including an impressive 16 in his final season in Berkshire.

A more historic player to have played for both, is Maidenhead legend Carl Pentney. The shot stopper joined City on an initial one-month loan as emergency cover for the injured ‘keeper. He made his debut just two days after signing and would have his loan extended by a further month, meaning he made a total on 13 appearances for the Somerset side. Carl arrived in Berkshire in 2015 and was as ever-present as you can get for the next three seasons. He played 148 consecutive league games for Alan Devonshire’s side, including the promotion season of 2017. Pents now takes up a position as Head of Academy Goalkeeping at Ipswich Town. We were also delighted to share that Carl and many other United legends will be joining us for Retro Day when we host Hampton & Richmond on Bank Holiday Monday.
A disappointing Non-League Day will have to be quickly brushed over by United as the bounce back needs to be immediate. A 2-1 defeat to playoff rivals Weston-super-Mare saw the Magpies slip out of the top seven and the Seagulls snuck in. Goals from Louis Britton and Leo Pecover left United with too much to do following a slow opening hour. Matt Robinson pulled one back with a tidy glancing header at the near post and nearly levelled with a carbon copy of the set piece. However, it would only be consolation as the visitors held on by hook or by crook.

It has been an incredibly difficult couple of months for Bath who have slid down the table. Their last win, despite being an impressive 3-2 win over Worthing, came in January. They have picked up a few points since with draws to Ebbsfleet, Weston and Hornchurch to name a few. The Romans have also since appointed a new man at the helm as Scott Bartlett has taken the reigns from Darren Way. On Saturday, they played out another draw as a battle with relegation rivals Eastbourne Borough finished 2-2. Josh Laqeretabua’s rebound and Alex Fisher’s superb strike overturned an early deficit but were denied three points by Will Armitage’s late header.
