Maidenhead United vs Chelmsford City
Match preview
In our first home game of September, we welcome Chelmsford City to York Road.
The last meeting between the two sides came in 2017, United came out 1-0 victors as Dave Tarpey smashed in a penalty on the verge of half time. Remy Clerima’s goalbound header was adjudged to hit a Chelmsford players’ hand, giving Tarpey his 33rd goal of the season.
When the Clarets last visited York Road, the result was almost exactly the same. Dave Tarpey was the scorer in another 1-0 victory, this time latching onto Sean Marks’ knock down before firing into the corner on his left foot soon after the interval.
The sides faced each other numerous times during United’s National League South stint in early 2000s. In the 10 most recent meetings, Maidenhead have taken six wins while Saturday’s visitors have won twice.
Footballing connections stem deep into the city of Chelmsford, World Cup legend Sir Geoff Hurst grew up in the area. The father of the only man to score a hat-trick for England in a World Cup final, Charlie Hurst, played for City in the late 1940s while a young Geoff watched on. Along with this, the late great Jimmy Greaves spent a singular season at the Clarets in the late 1970s. Widely regarded as one of England's best ever players, Greaves featured 38 times and scored 20 goals in all competitions - even enjoying a foray into the Anglo-Italian Cup.
Chelmsford have endured a mixed start to the season, but three victories from the opening seven have put them into the early mix for play-offs. The Clarets most recent result was a 5-2 loss to Farnborough, with summer recruits Josh Castiglione and Lyle Taylor scoring their maiden goals, but a rampant Farnborough meant both were nothing more than consolations.
The Magpies come into Saturday’s fixture off the back of three wins on the bounce. 2-1 victories over Horsham and Dover Athletic were capped off by an impressive 4-0 win at Bath City. An own goal from Jack Batten gave United the lead inside the opening 35 seconds as he headed Kane Ferdinand’s cross into his own net. Young midfielder Josh Popoola starred, scoring his first two goals for the club, while Liam Dulson grabbed his second of the season.
