Maidenhead United vs Chippenham Town
Match Preview
In Alan Devonshire’s final game, United welcome Chippenham Town to York Road, for what is also our Grassroots Community Day.
Meetings between Saturday’ sides have been few and far between. The most recent of which came in the 2018/19 season, both of which came in the FA Cup campaign. The initial fourth qualifying round game finished 1-1 at Hardenhuish Park as Christian Smith’s goal was cancelled out by Michael Jones’ equaliser late into stoppage time. The replay came just three days later, as United saw out a narrow 1-0 victory as Adrian Clifton scored the game’s only goal, smashing in a James Comley cross that caused plenty of confusion.
Saturday will bring to an end Dev’s 3,861-day tenure as Magpies boss. His second spell at the club, which has seen him most notably lead United to promotion to the National League, where they would stay for eight years. Not just known for managing clubs across non-league, Dev is fondly thought of by many West Hams thanks to his impressive playing days. A tricky wide player, many would recall Devonshire as being one of those players that got you on the edge, if not off, of your seat. Known for his impressive dribbling and creativity, Dev eventually made over 440 appearances and scoring 42 goals for The Hammers. With seven trophies and two promotions across his two spells managing Maidenhead United, Devonshire leaves the Magpies as a true footballing legend – not just locally, but throughout wider footballing community.
Chippenham have earned five points from their past five National League South matches, with a win against Tonbridge Angels and draws with Eastbourne and Farnborough. The most recent of which, against the Boro, saw them fight back from 2-0 down to earn a point. Substitute Olaf Koszela halved the deficit with 10 minutes remaining scoring a stunning long-range effort, before Tom Owen-Evans drew The Bluebirds level in the 87th minute. Former Magpie, Harry Parsons, now plays his football out of Hardenhuish Park, but his minutes have been fairly limited so far this campaign.
United finally broke their duck during the week, and in emphatic fashion as the ran out 6-0 winners at The Raymond McEnhill Stadium. The standout man so far this season, Josh Popoola was on fine form, opening the scoring before assisting the second for Liam Dulson with some tremendous trickery. Dulson would then turn for provider for Josh Umerah in the opening stages of the second 45. Will de Havilland made it four as he got the faintest of touches on Popoola’s low cross, before that man made it 5 with a tidy finish from 12 yards. Noah Stewart came off the bench to complete the scoring as he slotted in Sam Barratt’s threaded pass.
