Maidenhead United vs Dagenham & Redbridge
Match Preview
We’re back at York Road after two away games as we play host to Dagenham & Redbridge.
There are few opponents The Magpies have faced more in recent times than The Daggers, the most recent of which in last November. On that occasion, Joe Haigh scored the games’ only goal as the hosts’ secured all three points at the Chigwell Construction Stadium. Haigh was on hand to tap in from close range following Andy Carroll’s knockdown. A torrid afternoon only got worse when substitute Corie Andrews was shown a straight red for an off-the-ball incident. A last-gasp opportunity fell the way of Jayden Mitchell-Lawson, but the angle was against him, and his effort flew over the crossbar.
There are a fair few players who have played for both Dagenham and Maidenhead and many who currently feature in both matchday squads. Five of which have appeared this season in Berkshire and two in Greater London. Some exciting news about one of them was released this week as Matt Robinson, signed a new contract with United, and he has played for both. A seven-season stay at The Daggers came to an end in 2023 with a total of 251 appearances and 22 goals. During his time with Dagenham, Kama was called up to the England C team for an International Challenge Trophy match against Estonia U23. Since joining United in the summer, our number 12 has become a popular figure with consistent strong performances, featuring 31 times already and scoring three crucial goals.
Moving to Saturday’s visitors, now able to feature after to his sending off against Horsham last weekend was rescinded, Sam Howes has also played for both sides. The former England Youth shot-stopper joined United on an emergency loan at the end of last season filling in for the injured Craig Ross – going on to make six appearances for United. Howes agreed to join Dagenham in the summer, signing a two-year deal at which he has since been ever-present between the sticks starting in 24 games this season.
Another to have played for both is Adrian Clifton, who has a rather unknown link to Saturday’s team sheets. Clifton joined United in 2013, winning Manager’s Player of the Season in his debut season. After two seasons at York Road, Clifton joined current Daggers Manager Lee Bradbury’s Havant & Waterlooville. In 2017, he rejoined United for another two-year spell before joining Dagenham for a year in 2020. He made just the six appearances in red and blue. In 2022, he headed back to Berkshire for a third spell with United for a single season to take his total appearances at York Road to 163 and his goals tally 41.
A trip to table-toppers Torquay last weekend saw former Gull Josh Umerah knock them off their perch. Goals from Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Umerah either side of the break, saw it end a-point-apiece. Lo-Everton broke free from United defenders before slotting under Jordi van Stappershoef into the corner. But in a resurgence after the interval, United broke from back to front as van Stappershoef bowled the ball out to Liam Dulson who drove almost 60 yards up the pitch before being tripped on the edge of the area. Josh Umerah stepped up and did one better than his attempt on Tuesday night, lifting his effort perfectly over the wall and into the corner for his ninth of the season.
The Daggers currently sit one place below United and in hot contention for those much-desired playoff spots. A weekend victory against Bath City made it four without defeat for the London side. Dermi Lusala’s goal late in the first half was enough as a man of the match performance from Sam Howes kept their clean sheet intact. Saturday’s victory for Dagenham was meant to be followed up by a midweek trip to Farnborough, but the weather had other ideas. The man to watch is midfielder Joe Haigh, with six goals and six assists this season he is the Daggers’ most prolific contributor in front of goal. The former Chelsea youngster is in strong form with four goal involvements in the past three games.
