Dorking Wanderers vs Maidenhead United

Match Preview

The busy schedule continues as we head to Meadowbank to face Dorking Wanderers in our final game of October.

The sides have faced each other just five times before, having almost as even of a record as you can get. Both sides have won twice along with a single draw that came in the first ever meeting. The most recent meeting came in March of last year in the Vanarama National League, the Magpies won that game 4-2 at Meadowbank. Four different scorers got in on the act that afternoon, Sam Beckwith opened the scoring before Reece Smith regave United the lead around the half-hour mark. Jayden Mitchell-Lawson doubled the advantage on the brink of half time; Tristan Abrahams then rounded of scoring on the verge of the 90.

Every Shrove Tuesday in the late 1800s, all residents of Dorking would head to the streets for a mass street football game. The game was played between “Eastenders” and “Westenders” would last roughly four hours of the afternoon as the teams tried to retain the ball in their parts of the town. The day began with a procession featuring musicians and strange metal frame with three footballs attached. Known for being extremely violent, a collection would go out to repay damages caused in the town – because of this the game was eventually banned in 1897.

Dorking come into the sitting in mid table, in what has become a very tight knit Enterprise National League South table. A more solid previous five games have seen them generate some points on the board accumulating six from three draws, a win and a loss. The win came in their most recent fixture, on Saturday, a 3-1 victory hosting Torquay United. Three first half goals from Alfie Rutherford, Josh Taylor and Jimmy Muitt were enough to secure a first win with Torquay only replying through Jordan Young in added time.

Maidenhead come into the game on less of a solid run of form, suffering two losses and a draw in the recent busy schedule to close out October. The most recent of which, a frustrating 1-0 loss to Farnborough as Dom Poleon’s goal with a quarter of an hour to go was enough to secure Boro’s third league win of the season.
