Maidenhead United vs Dorking Wanderers
Match Preview
It’s another big clash at York Road as table toppers Dorking Wanderers come to town.
The reverse fixture came during a tough period in October of last year, as the Wanderers won 1-0. Brennan Camp arrived at the far post with 20 minutes on the clock to score the decisive goal, latching on to Frank Vincent’s cross. Asher Yearwood and Josh Popoola both had efforts blocked later in the first half, the latter felt his attempt was blocked illegally but the referee disagreed. Kane Ferdinand also had an effort about halfway through the second 45, he latched onto a half-cleared Sam Barratt throw in but crashed his effort wide of the upright. A largely uneventful remainder of the second half saw the introduction of fresh faces as United pushed for an equaliser, but only Kai Yearn gave Foulkes much to worry about. His shot from outside the box was a simple enough save for the Dorking ‘keeper, who kept hold off his clean sheet.
Playing for both Maidenhead and Dorking is not a common switch and very few have done so. Current QPR goalkeeper Joe Walsh is one who made the switch and it also came in the same campaign. In November of 2022, Walsh joined The Wanderers on an eventual two-month loan deal - in that time he’d make six appearances. Just a month after the conclusion of that deal, Walsh headed to United for a further short-term loan deal. The young shot stopper would go on to make just the two appearances for The Magpies, making his debut in a 1-1 draw at Solihull Moors.
Staying between the sticks, Sam Howes has also featured for both of Saturday’s sides. Howes, who has featured a few times, played the closing six fixtures of the season last campaign for The Magpies. Howes had many a short stint around clubs at National League level. Hampton & Richmond, Eastbourne and Chelmsford to name a few but in 2020 he joined the Wanderers for a short loan spell and then made that move permanent the summer that followed. Howes would only appear eight times across all competitions during his single year permanent move.
Another to have also featured before in our ‘played for both’ segment is midfielder Alfie Egan. He was last registered with Dulwich Hamlet in the Isthmian League; two seasons prior he played 13 games for Dorking in the National League. Two seasons before that Egan joined Maidenhead and would register 10 appearances in Berkshire without scoring for either side.
Dorking come into Saturday’s clash sitting top of the tree, having been in and around there all season and have now secured an eight-point cushion. They come into the game off the back of back-to-back victories against Enfield Town and Ebbsfleet United. Seven goals across the aforementioned fixtures, the league’s second-top scorers have shown their clinical edge. Goals are well-distributed across the squad as well with Charlie Carter currently top with 10, along with seven players scoring more than five times this campaign.
Despite a disappointing midweek result, Ryan Peters’ side remain in the playoff spots going into another huge meeting. A fight back late on wasn’t enough to earn any points from our Ebbsfleet encounter as two goals in added time would prove only to be consolation. Liam Dulson grabbed his 13th of the season on the verge of 90 minutes, before Matt Robinson halved the deficit in the 94th minute. With just five added United had only one more chance to draw level as Manny Onariase had his effort clawed out by Matt Hall to save Ebbsfleet embarrassment.
