Dover Athletic vs Maidenhead United
Match Preview
To close out a busy opening month to the season, United will travel south to Dover Athletic.
Maidenhead’s last visit to the Crabble Athletic Ground came in 2022, as Josh Kelly’s 92nd minute winner all but secured our National League status ahead of the 2022/23 season. The reverse fixture, United’s first home game of that season, also saw them run out victorious – this time a 2-0 win as Sam Barratt and Josh Kelly’s early goals were enough to secure three points. Current Magpies Will de Havilland, Remy Clerima, Kane Ferdinand and the aforementioned Sam Barratt all featured in both clashes that campaign.
The two sides have had many close fought battles in the last 11 years, with five wins for the Magpies, one draw and four losses across the past 10 encounters.
Alternatively known as The Crabble, Dover’s home ground is thought to have got its name from an Old English term “crabba hol” (a hole where crabs are found), linking it to the nearby river and corn mill site. The initial project, finished in 1897, was an extremely costly one but managed to host football matches that same year. The pitch was shared with the town's cricket club, which started to cause problems. As a result a new pitch was built further up the hillside, hosting its first game in 1931, this is the same pitch that United will take to on Saturday.
The Whites have enjoyed a strong start to the season under Jake Leberl, with three wins from their opening five. Defeating Bath City and Eastbourne Borough in back-to-back away victories before securing three points at home to Salisbury in a 2-0 win. Young forward George Nikaj scored twice in the three successive wins, adding to his double in their opening day defeat, headlining a bright start to the season. Bank Holiday Monday saw Saturday’s hosts fall to late defeat against Torquay United as Alfie Matthews’ double from set pieces were rendered null and void as Matt Jay snatched all three points in the closing stages.
The Magpies had a different fate to close out the busy nine-day schedule securing a first win of the season. A towering header guided into the far corner from Remy Clerima drew us level early into the second half. Then Jayden Mitchell-Lawson, in his first start for over nine months, flicked Josh Popoola’s cross into the net rounding off a brilliant second-half performance.
