Maidenhead United vs Dover Athletic
Match Preview
Our final home game of the regular season sees us welcome Dover Athletic to York Road.
Our visit to the Crabble came nearly eight months ago and it saw United fly to three points. It was the skipper who secured the victory as his double either side of the hosts’ leveller got our first triple of the season on the road. An early breakthrough came as Will de Havilland smashed into the net from in inside the six-yard box, rewarding a bright United start. The first half continued in that vein as The Magpies pushed for a second, with all of the front three for the afternoon having efforts on goal. However, George Nikaj drew the hosts level, firing in from a tight angle on the right flank early into the second 45. Tussling their way back into the game, United retook the lead as de Havilland nodded home Remy Clerima’s looped cross. Some strong defensive contibutions from Jordi van Stappershoef and his back four made sure United saw it out for three points on their travels.
It was a familiar stomping ground for the skipper as he spent two seasons with The Whites between 2019-21, before swapping Kent for Berkshire. Will played 46 games for Dover in all competitions, scoring an impressive five goals. At the conclusion of his two-year stay, he headed to York Road where has stayed ever since, and become club captain. He has made 188 appearances for United in his so far five season stay, scoring ten.
Another current United player to have played for both is Siju Odelusi, and he has done so this season. The midfielder, contracted to Sutton United, has joined both Dover and Maidenhead on loan this season along while also representing The U’s. He has played 30 times across the three sides this season, almost perfectly splitting the appearances too; donning the black and white ten times, the white nine times and amber 11 times. Siju is yet to score this season but proved he has an eye for goal at this level when he scored 17 for Aveley FC in the 2023/24 season.
The final player to have played for both is Will’s once centre half partner in Kevin Lokko. The now 30-year-old joined Dover initially on loan from Stevenage in February 2018, before making that move permanent in the summer. He’d stay there for another two seasons, earning National League Player of the Month for January 2019, all while accumulating 81 appearances and eleven goals. In 2023, he headed to York Road for a two-year spell making 59 appearances, scoring eight times and once again proving his threat in the air. He since departed for Folkestone Invicta who recently won the Isthmian Division Premier Division.
It’s been a tricky season for Dover, but they managed to secure their National League South status for next season in the week. Seven points clear of 21st and some decent results this season, including a strong festive run, mean The Whites won’t face the drop on their return to this level. Although, it is five without a win for Saturday’s visitors, having faced sides all competing for crucial points at both ends of the table. George Nikaj is the man to watch with 13 goals and four assists this season, his contributions have been crucial in securing vital points and ultimately safety.
It’s become crunch time as the regular season draws to a close and United sit a point and a place adrift of the playoff places going into Matchweek 45. Last Saturday saw a late Josh Umerah penalty rescue Maidenhead a point on the road at Chelmsford, after Jack Barham opened the scoring 15 minutes earlier. A goal which took his tally for the season to 16 and made it five in his last four matches, a man in fine form.
