Ebbsfleet United vs Maidenhead United
Match Preview
We close out January on the road as we travel to the Kuflink Stadium with Ebbsfleet United our all too familiar hosts.
Our last meeting came just nine months ago saw The Magpies come out 2-0 victors on the day. Stalemate in the first 45 was breached early in the second as Shawn McCoulsky grabbed his 14th of the season. His calm, slotted finish, in front of the travelling contingent, sent an array of robbers, bananas and inflated dinosaurs jubilant. McCoulsky turned provider to send the t-rex arms in the air once more, setting Brendan Kiernan to fire into the roof of the net and make it two. A victory that prolonged United’s stay in the National League for a further week.
Our final fun fact of 2025/26 as we complete the 23 takes us to Kent, and more specifically, Ebbsfleet. The naming of which is rather poignant due to there being two places in Kent called Ebbsfleet, one west and one east. The Ebbsfleet of West Kent, where the football club is located, is believed to have taken its name from their eastern counterparts in the 17th century. Due to an antiquary’s confusion as to where the first Saxon bands settled in England, and with Northfleet already existing in this spot, the alternative was to call it Ebbsfleet due to the ebbing of the tides. Further to the naming fiasco, in 2007, the football club changed its name from Gravesend and Northfleet to Ebbsfleet United, after agreeing a sponsorship deal with Eurostar, whose trains used to run through the nearby Ebbsfleet International station.
The Fleet have been on the up since the start of the season and continue to look to cement a place in the heavily-contested playoff places. Five wins in their last six in the league have seen them climb up to seventh in a run that was only ruined by midweek disappointment at Kent rivals Maidstone. A 3-0 defeat at the hands of The Stones only intensifies the playoff race. Goals from Jephte Tanga, Deon Moore and a Joshua Passley own goal went without reply under the Gallagher Stadium lights. Former Ipswich, Reading and Blackburn forward Dominic Samuel leads the line for Ebbsfleet. He tops their scoring table with 11 this campaign, helped massively by a fine run of form to close out 2025.
United still make up the pack chasing said playoff spots, in what is proving to be an unforgiving charge. With midweek action at York Road called off due to a waterlogged pitch, the squad enjoyed what will become a rather rare seven-day break from 90-minute action. Last time out saw United settle for a point at Chesham United, as Liam Dulson’s strike cancelled out Mitchell Weiss’ opener. Callum Adebiyi was dismissed late on for the hosts’ but United failed to capitalise during the short time played with a man advantage.
