Maidenhead United vs Ebbsfleet United

Match Preview

After a week on the South Coast, we head back to Berkshire for the first of four successive home games starting with Ebbsfleet United.

The fixture earlier in the season at Kuflink Stadium ended 3-0 to the hosts. Goals from Ronny Nelson, Dominic Samuel and Kwesi Appiah inside the last 20 minutes saw the scoreline feel rather damning after a strong opening hour from United. Liam Dulson and Jordon Ragguette were the first to test Matt Hall as he parried both away. Jayden Mitchell-Lawson had him worried towards the end of the first half, his effort from range flew marginally over the bar. Mitchell-Lawson went close again in the second half, as he latched on to Josh Umerah’s flick before driving into the area but dragged his effort wide.

Playing for both Ebbsfleet and Maidenhead is one of the more common transitions to make compared to many other teams we’ve faced this season. One of those who has is current Hampton & Richmond forward Brendan Kiernan. He spent the closing stages of last campaign in a black and white striped shirt, making an impact that was second to none. Kiernan came in for just nine games but scored five and assisted twice including key contributions Rochdale, Woking and his former employers, Ebbsfleet. In 2014/15, Kiernan played for The Fleet making 14 appearances at this level and in the FA Trophy scoring once in the Trophy. At that time of his contract expiration at The Fleet, he nearly decided to retire but instead joined Lingfield, while working with as a teaching assistant/ personal trainer.

Another to have played for both is keeper Nathan Ashmore. The shot stopper, who is frequently chanted about on visits to York Road, spent a few months at United in the 2021/22 season making eight appearances. He had a much more permanent stay at Ebbsfleet between 2016 and 2020, where he would make 164 appearances. In that time, he won the Player of the Season Award in back-to-back years, along with promotion to the National League through the playoff in 2016/17.
The last to have played for both is Ayo Obileye. The centre half played just a single season at each, but heavily featured both times round. Starting with Maidenhead in 2018/19, Obileye played 38 times scoring 4 – an impressive return for a central defender. He matched that total at Ebbsfleet in eight games fewer as he swapped Berkshire for Kent in the summer of 2019.

It has been neck and neck for much of the campaign between Ebbsfleet and Maidenhead as both sides currently sit on 62 points and fill the last two playoff positions. The Fleet come into the game off the back of a 3-1 defeat to league leaders Dorking as Ben Chapman’s opener late in the first half was marred by three second half Wanderers’ goals. Although, they had preceded that with wins over Eastbourne Borough and Torquay United. Three goals in each of those saw six different scorers, one of which was top scorer Dominic Samuel. The former EFL forward has scored 15 goals already this season, sitting him joint third with a fair few other forwards.

United come into the game off the back of a strong string of results but tests come thick and fast. Four points on the South Coast, and two clean sheets, were a result of resolute defending and a clinical edge. Liam Dulson was the provider of said clinical edge as he struck sweetly into the far corner of the verge of 90 minutes against Eastbourne. Dillon De Silva, Alfie Pendlebury and Matt Robinson all combined down the right before Dulson provided the cause for celebration behind the goal. That goal took Liam's total to 12 for this campaign as he sits joint fifth in the league's scoring table.
