A huge thank you to AB Walker for their continued support of Maidenhead United.
The two sides played out a rather unenthralling 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture this season. The first ever meeting between the two sides was not the most memorable, with chances aplenty but no goals to show for it. Sam Barratt crashed the bar, as Manny Onariase and Josh Umerah also went close. But the talking point post-match was the huge penalty shout as Xavier Benjamin’s outstretched arm appeared to prevent Josh Popoola’s pass from reaching Liam Dulson; a claim that was duly turned away. It was a first point of the season as United got onto the board on the second weekend of 2025/26.
Despite no previous leagues meetings before this season between this Saturday’s sides, there are a handful of players who have played for both. Ricky Gabriel played 70 times for The Towners and then a further five times for United, although the less said about his current situation, the better.
Aryan Tajbakhsh also featured for both, joining The Magpies on two separate occasions – in 2009 and 2012. Taj would go on to only make a handful of appearances in black and white. Throughout his career, he was quite a ‘non-league journeyman’ and moved 32 times in his career eventually joining Enfield Town in 2015, where he’d play 17 times and score once.
Another player to feature for both was Dean Mason who joined United at a similar time to Aryan Taj’s first stint at the club. His appearances would also be limited, featuring just three times. After a bit of travelling around clubs, the Montserrat international joined Enfield Town in August 2018 where he’d only feature in an Alan Turvey Trophy match. He moved from Greater London back to Berkshire in February 2019 but would be limited in minutes again, playing only in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup. Mason has played 28 times for the Montserrat national team, a total that places him third on their all-time appearance list. One ahead of James Comley on 25 and three ahead of Adrian Clifton on 23 appearances.
It’s been a tricky first half of the season for Town in their second season at this level, as the side sit 22nd in the table. Despite this, they have beaten a few sides in and around the playoff places. An impressive 3-1 win over Ebbsfleet United was followed just over a month later with a 2-1 victory over Maidstone United. Lamar Reynolds, who scored in both wins, sits top of the scoring charts with eight league goals this campaign. A clear focal point in the side, who bolstered his tally with a hat-trick in a 5-1 demolition of Farnborough. He has linked up well with on-loan QPR youngster Cian Dillon, who already has four assists and a goal in just six appearances since renewing his loan.
United currently sit three places outside of the playoff spots in 10th, five points adrift of seventh. Despite that spot being taken up by the team The Magpies just completed the season double over, Horsham. The Hornets struck early as James Hammond stepped up and converted from the spot. But, a second half turnaround, much alike the first meeting this season, saw United return with all three points. Miles Welch-Hayes nodded in Josh Popoola’s cross for his first of the season around the hour mark. Before Matt Robinson put his name in the hat for the goal of the season with a wonder strike on the 90-minute mark. The ball fell nicely for him on the edge, but he still had plenty to do, he struck it sweet and into the top right corner cueing scenes of jubilation.
