Maidenhead United vs Farnborough

Match Preview

Our first February fixture sees Farnborough visit York Road.

The meeting in Hampshire earlier in the season saw Farnborough take all three points. Dom Poleon scored the game’s only goal with just over a quarter of an hour to go. Played through by Tommy-Lee Higgs, Poleon was left 1-on-1 with Jordi van Stappershoef whom he was able to slot under. The Magpies pressed for an equaliser but saw little in the way of clear-cut chances. Four minutes of added time saw Louie Holzman sent off for a second bookable offence, but it was too little, too late as the Magpies slumped to defeat.

Much alike those who swapped Berkshire for Buckinghamshire just under a fortnight ago, moving between Berkshire and Hampshire is just as common. One player who played for both was our former centre-back, Kevin Lokko. Departing in the summer for Folkestone Invicta, Lokko made 59 appearances, across two seasons, in the black and white stripes of Maidenhead. In which time he scored an impressive eight goals from his defensive position. Continuing reverse chronologically, it was Farnborough from whom Lokko joined United. He played 50 times in just one season in Hampshire, scoring twice in that time.

Another defender to feature for both Maidenhead and Farnborough is Dean Inman. The now 35-year-old centre-half featured 33 times for Boro across two loan spells in 2012 and 2013. In between stints with The Yellows and United, Inman spent two years at Hayes & Reading United. He then joined Maidenhead in July 2015, going on to make 97 appearances and nine goals including 40 and 4 goals in the promotion winning season. Creating a formidable partnership with Alan Massey who almost took over the reigns at Hampton & Richmond with Inman departing there as a club legend in 2024 and Massey joining a year later.

To go along with one promotion winner, why not have another in Dave Tarpey. The United legend joined Farnborough in the summer of 2012 where he’d stay for 18 months. 57 appearances and 13 goals later he joined Hampton & Richmond for six months before making his way to Berkshire. Tarpey, synonymous with many magical Magpies moments, enjoyed a fruitful three year stay with United. Making 132 appearances and scoring 92 goals, calling Tarps prolific would be an understatement. An integral part of the National League South winning side, Tarpey set records of his own scoring 44 goals in just 41 games breaking the league’s previous highest by 10.
Last time out, United fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Ebbsfleet United. A strong first half and opening to the second left United rueing missed opportunities and The Fleet showed their clinical edge. Goals from Ronny Nelson, Dominic Samuel and Kwesi Appiah went without reply, seeing The Magpies gap from the playoff spots widen to seven points.

Farnborough currently find themselves in amongst the relegation zone, in what is starting to look like it could be decided by the narrowest of margins. A recent run of postponed games means it’ll be a fortnight since Boro’s last 90-minute action. However, it was a 2-1 victory against relegation rivals Eastbourne Borough. Toby Bower’s equaliser with around 20 minutes to go meant Ollie Robinson’s strike in added time completed the turnaround, rendering Maxwell Mullins’ opening goal moot. The man who caused problems in our last meeting remains the key threat; Dom Poleon’s nine goals this campaign leaves him top of their scoring charts.
