Maidenhead United vs Faversham Town
Match preview
This Saturday we get our FA Cup qualifying campaign underway as we host Faversham Town.
The two sides have faced each other previously, at this exact same stage of the competition 11 years ago. The Magpies won 4-0 that day, Danny Green opened the scoring from the spot placing it down the middle on the 20-minute mark. The lead would remain one goal until the 70th minute when DJ Campbell’s deflected effort looped in. The floodgates had then suitably opened as Tashan Adeyinka and Reece Tilson-Lascaris each found the bottom corner in the closing 10 minutes.
Faversham progressed through to this stage through a replay against Hasting United. After the initial tie finished 2-2, with Town equalising twice in added time, they forced a replay in dramatic fashion. The second tie, just three days later in East Sussex, saw Faversham put three second half goals past their hosts. Eniye Amgbaduba opened the scoring with his third this season in FA Cup qualifying alone. Soon after the hour mark Tashi-Jay Kwayie’s double secured progression to the second qualifying round – their first time reaching this stage in eight years.
The town of Faversham is home to Britain’s oldest brewery, Shepherd Neame, which has had brewing take place at the site since 1573. Perhaps best known for great British classic ales such as Spitfire, produced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain while also carrying the Royal Warrant. Shepherd Neame also brew international lagers under licence including Samuel Adams Boston Lager, and are the sole UK distributor for premium Thai lager Singha and Truly Hard Seltzer.
Our visitors currently sit top of the Isthmian League South East Division. Having enjoyed a very solid start to the season, as they remain unbeaten in the league – winning three from four. The Lilywhites have been prolific this campaign scoring 13 in the league already, helped by an emphatic 6-1 victory over Deal Town. However, last time out they fell to a 2-1 loss against Sittingbourne meaning they exited the Isuzu FA Trophy to their Kent rivals.
Maidenhead come into the game on a strong run of league form, having won all of their last four. Two away victories against Dover Athletic and Bath City were sandwiched between home wins over Horsham and Chelmsford City. The most recent of which, against The Clarets, was a 2-1 victory with Liam Dulson’s venomous volley opening the scoring soon before half time. His strike was cancelled out by Jack Barham as we approached full time, however, Josh Popoola’s 92nd minute strike into the corner ensured all three points remained in Berkshire.
