Hampton & Richmond vs Maidenhead United
Match Preview
Ryan Peters’ first away trip as United’s Interim Manager takes us to the Beveree for a battle with The Beavers.
The two sides last met just under a decade ago, in a nil-nil draw on the opening weekend of March. The reverse fixture was far more entertaining as United came out 3-2 victors seeing them hold onto top spot in the National League South. There were plenty of familiar faces to Magpies fans that day, starting with current player Harry Pritchard who opened the scoring after eight minutes. Jamal Lowe, currently at Sheffield Wednesday, equalised within minutes, however, celebrations were short-lived as Dean Inman looped in a long-range header – restoring Maidenhead's advantage. Ryan Upward made it three on the hour mark as his header was deflected into the net. Jamal Lowe tried his best to claw The Beavers back into the game, converting a Brendan Kiernan cross ten minutes from time. Both of Saturday’s managers were there that day; but not how we thought it would be a week ago. Alan Dowson was in the dugout for The Beavers, while Ryan Peters took up his right back spot alongside Alan Massey.
Despite not quite being in Hampton, Hampton Court Palace is its most notable local attraction our fun fact is brought to you from Henry VIII’s former dwellings. The Palace is home to many weird and wonderful draws, one of which being the world’s oldest and largest grapevine. Named quite aptly, ‘The Great Vine’ is over 250 years old and spreads four metres across the base and its longest branch extends over 40 metres long. The average crop of black dessert grapes is about 272 kilograms (600lbs). However, in the autumn of 2001 it was 383 kilograms (845 lbs): the best crop ever. The grapes are ripe for picking after August Bank Holiday and are available to buy in the palace shop in early September. Albeit from a different vine, guests to the Palace were once able to consume free wine from the Wine Fountain found in the inner courtyard.
The Beavers start to the season has been far from an easy one, as they enter this weekend’s round of fixtures just a point and a place above the drop zone. A run of 12 without a win saw Alan Julian depart after a near six year stay at the club, first as a player then joining the coaching staff before becoming manager in 2024. Alan Massey took interim charge in a player-manager role for their midweek clash against AFC Totton, guiding Hampton to a 2-0 victory. Reece Grego-Cox fired into the roof of the net to open the scoring soon before halftime, before joint top scorer Harry Gardner fired in low from the edge of the area.
The Magpies currently hold a streak of three wins on the bounce in the National League South, the most recent of which an assertive 2-0 win over Hornchurch. An all-round brilliant performance from Ryan Peters’ side, a dangerous Josh Popoola corner halfway through the first 45 caused chaos at the front post before finding its way into the far corner. Will de Havilland wheeled away in celebration, but it’s still inconclusive who got the telling glancing touch. Jayden Mitchell-Lawson ensured the Peyo Era started with three points as he struck into the far corner on the verge of the 90. A disappointing Berks & Bucks defeat on Tuesday separates our two league fixtures but United will be looking to extend their streak in the league to four on Saturday.
