Maidenhead United vs Hornchurch

Match Preview

To start a new era, and a new month, we welcome Hornchurch for another league fixture at York Road.

The last meetings between The Magpies and The Urchins came in the 2012/13 Blue Square Bet South season. A campaign in which Hornchurch filled the last relegation spot and United finished just one point, and one place, above. February 2013 was the last time the two faced off, a game which ended 2-0 to Maidenhead as two set-pieces ensured three points came back to Berkshire. Alex Wall smashed in a free-kick just prior to the 20-minute mark, before Bobby Behzadi slotted in from the penalty spot. The reverse fixture, at York Road, saw Hornchurch run out 4-2 victors as Harry Pritchard’s solo strike and Alex Wall’s rebound finish, in the second half, proved little more than consolation.

Hornchurch is home to Europe’s first Grade II listed skatepark, and the second such worldwide. The Rom was built in August 1978 by Adrian Rolt, the park is 8,000 square metres and its design reflects the UK’s unique heritage and all parts of British culture and history. Awarded the Grade II listed status in 2014, The Rom joined the only other protected skate park in the world; the famous ‘Bro Bowl’ in Tampa, Florida. Although, this has been destroyed and rebuilt elsewhere meaning the Rom is the only heritage listed full size skate park.

Hornchurch enjoyed a rather formidable start to the league season, winning 11 of their opening 16 matches – a period for which they remained undefeated. However, this run came to an end at Chelmsford in early November with a 2-0 defeat. A relative slump since then has seen them drop points in a 1-1 draw with AFC Totton and a 5-0 defeat to Worthing. However, a huge bounce back in midweek saw them overturn Hemel Hempstead by four goals to nil. Angelo Balanta scored two quickfire goals in the opening quarter of an hour, before Darren McQueen and Harry Gibbs rounded off the scoring. The forward partnership of Henry Hearn and Balanta appear to be the source of danger for the Urchins, taking the top two spots in the scoring charts with seven and nine respectively.

United saw an upturn in form last week, following up a 6-0 win at Salisbury with a 3-0 victory against Chippenham Town at York Road. Liam Dulson opened the scoring on the verge of half time, against The Bluebirds, striking low and hard into the far corner. Josh Umerah made it two as he headed home Owen Cochrane’s inch-perfect cross just past the hour mark. Dev’s substitutes combined late on to add a third as Jayden Mitchell-Lawson was tripped in the area, giving Sam Barratt the chance to wrap up the scoring. Which he duly did, before tipping his newly acquired hat in celebration and homage to departing manager Alan Devonshire.
