Maidenhead United Women vs Chelsea Academy
Match Preview
Football at York Road never stops, as this weekend Maidenhead United Women welcome the exciting challenge of Chelsea Academy U21.
It certainly promises to be an exciting encounter as we host the stars of the future from one of the world's best teams! But more than that, it's a great opportunity for this new-look Maidenhead side to show what they are capable of as two squads with different but huge ambitions go head-to-head.
The young Blues come to Berkshire with it all to play for in the final game of the FA Women's National League Group Stage, with both sides needing three points to have any chance of qualifying. Chelsea are in second place in the group, three points behind Actonians. United will only be able to overhaul the Blues with a victory. Anything less and the Magpies' chance of qualifying for the latter stages of the Cup or even the Plate competition could depend on results elsewhere.
The visitors play their games in the PGA U21 Women’s League South, where they currently sit second after the opening few fixtures. Three wins from three leaves only Arsenal with a better record having played and won a game more. In their victories, the young Blues have shown a ruthlessness in front of goal this campaign scoring 16 times in their five opening games. Most notably, a 5-0 victory against Charlton Athletic U21 and a 4-0 win over Bristol City U21. A 2-1 win against AFC Wimbledon in the FA WNL Cup kickstarted their fine league run. However, they have had their first taste of defeat, which came in this competition, as they fell to a narrow 3-2 loss at the hands of Actonians.
United’s start to the campaign has been a varied one and were not done any favours by their draw in Group H, being matched against three very good sides. MUWFC currently sit 7th in the FA Women’s National League South West, having picked up five points from their opening five games. Despite perhaps not having as many points on the board as they would like, Magpies Women have shown that they are able to compete with the teams pushing in the top half of the table. Points against Keynsham Town and Bridgwater United and a victory over Worthing, all sides which finished above them last year, shows promising signs for the new-look MUWFC side.
United have every right to come into the game in confidence, despite an agonising loss to local rivals Ascot United last weekend. Ines Cipriano scored after just five minutes, before Katie Akerman curled in beauty to give United a 2-1 lead in what was an electric first half. Unfortunately, this lead was let slip in the second 45 and despite some late attacking pressure the visitors saw out a 3-2 win.
We welcomed a season's best crowd for the local derby against Ascot and we'd love for you to join us as we look to beat it when welcoming the stars of the future from England's WSL reigning champions.
