Maidenhead United vs Slough Town
Match Preview
A match that needs very little introduction to those encompassed by the SL postcode is coming up on Boxing Day, as we welcome Slough Town to York Road.
Despite the rivalry between the two sides, match ups are actually few and far between. The most recent coming last year as Slough won 2-1 at Arbour Park in the Isuzu FA Trophy. Slavi Spasov and Lexus Beeden’s goals either side of half time meant that Joseph Ajose’s strike on 53 was purely a consolation. The two sides tend to cross paths in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup; in 2022 they played out a 1-1 draw as Sam Barratt scored before United eventually won 7-6 on penalties. Miraculously, it will be the 40th time Maidenhead have played Slough on either Boxing Day, Christmas Day or Christmas Eve. But, it's still some 25 years since the last league meeting at York Road between The Magpies and The Rebels.
In the penultimate fun fact of the season, Slough is honoured to be the birthplace of many things including the modern plastic wheelie bin. In March 1968, Frank Rotherham Mouldings used the mobilised bin to transport waste within their factory. It was a health inspector who saw its potential for public waste collection and would eventually revolutionise the waste disposal industry. The wheelie bins not only reduced worker strain but also paved the way for automated collection with the adoption of specialised bin-lifting trucks in the 1980s. It even made a sneak inclusion, along with many other weird and wonderful facts, into a fan song about the visit of Grimsby Town two years ago.
It has been a far from easy start to the season for Friday’s visitors, as they sit 22nd on 19 points. Despite defeats in three of their last four, Slough have managed to stay in the game on all occasions. An extra time defeat to Macclesfield followed a late sealer against Dover, while a nil-nil draw versus Dagenham & Redbridge proceeded a 2-1 defeat to Dorking. However, they have enjoyed some strong results this season including a 3-2 victory over AFC Totton, an early season 2-0 win over Ebbsfleet United along with a FA Cup run as far as the second round stage. Wiktor Makowski leading the line will pose a certain threat, along with Reading loanee Basil Tuma who scored on a visit to York Road just under three weeks ago.
The Magpies will look to see out 2025 with a win as they will try to simultaneously extend their unbeaten run to six. A draw away to Hemel put to an end a run of four consecutive wins, with victories most recently over Hornchurch and Hampton & Richmond. In what was a well-fought affair neither United or The Tudors produced any chances of a clear-cut nature. Jordi Van Stappershoef was the busier of the two keepers, forced into action early on to deny Kyran Wiltshire and Samuel Adenola. A clean sheet and some strong saves saw our flying Dutchman rewarded with a spot in the Enterprise National League South Team of the Week. Josh Popoola was the closest United came to scoring as a brilliant ball down the line from Jordon Ragguette found him in plenty of space. He checked out then in, but some strong recovering defending thwarted his shot about 8 yards from goal.
