Tonbridge Angels vs Maidenhead United
Match Preview
It’s a trip to Tonbridge ahead of our second fixture for February.
The meeting earlier in the season finished level under the York Road lights. A barrage of United pressure in the first 45 saw its reward just before the interval as Josh Popoola’s 25-yard strike rifled into the far corner. Probing for a second and failing to find one, partially down to Jacob Adams in the Angels net, United became susceptible to a leveller. A goal which came with 25 to go as Nazir Bakrin headed in from a corner causing defensive confusion.
Our played for both this week comes from a far more recent selection of players, starting with our current number 23, Josh Popoola. Becoming known as ‘Trialist A’ over the summer, Josh has more than earned his stay since signing. Seven goal and nine assists in 27 appearances already this season has made him a mainstay in both Dev’s and Peyo’s starting elevens. He had a much more brief stay with the Angels making just six appearances in early 2024.
Our second played for both player resides on the other side of Tuesday night’s fixture, current Tonbridge forward Ricky Korboa. Donning the black and white stripes for the latter half of last campaign, Korboa made six appearances for United grabbing a singular assist in that time. He then joined Tonbridge in October of last year, for whom he has since gone on to play 14 times scoring three and playing provider four times on top of that.
The third player is one to have appeared many times in our previews this season, Shamir Fenelon. The Brighton & Hove Albion Academy graduate had a short but impactful loan spell at the Angels, playing only eight times but scoring four. Fenelon joined United for the 2019/20 season, where he’d appear 19 times in the National League scoring five goals in his season-long spell.
Tonbridge have enjoyed a fairly strong run of form as it appears Head Coach Alan Dunne has embedded his ideas in the squad following his appointment in September. Two wins in their last four have steered the Angels clear of dangerous territory down the bottom. 3-2 win at Slough and a 4-1 demolition of AFC Totton were followed by a defeat to Chelmsford before holding their own for a point against Maidstone. Young forwards Oluwabunmi Babajide and Tom Leahy appear to be the goal threat for the Angels with 11 between them, split six and five respectively.
United have suffered a slight rut in recent weeks, including a frustrating result on Saturday afternoon. The Magpies fumbled a two-goal lead in the second half as Liam Dulson’s strike after 22 minutes and Josh Umerah’s soon after half time were only enough for a point. A header from Mason Bloomfield and Billy Clifford’s penalty meant Maidenhead would only take a point from Saturday’s encounter.
