Maidenhead United vs Tonbridge Angels

Match Preview

A chance to bounce back at the earliest possible opportunity as we welcome Tonbridge Angels under the York Road lights.

The last time the two sides met was a goalless draw back in the National League South back in April of 2014. The reverse fixture that season was played just over a month prior, in a game which saw plenty of goals as United ran out 4-2 victors. Danny Green grabbed all four goals that evening, scoring two in the first half then wrapping up his hat-trick with just under ten minutes left, before a penalty on the verge of time took his tally to four. Familiar names like Mark Nisbet, Harry Pritchard and Adrian Clifton all played that day as well.

Tonbridge was home to the biggest cash robbery in British history. On 22nd February 2006, over £53 million was stolen from the Securitas cash-handling depot. Five men were convicted of the “callous crime” in 2008. They wore prosthetic disguises and ended up leaving behind £153 million because it would not fit in the getaway van.

The Angels have had a varied start to the season picking up 13 points from their opening 11 outings. Since a shaky start, Tuesday’s visitors have enjoyed a recent upturn in points on the board – winning three on the bounce in the league before Saturday’s fixture. Tonbridge suffered a late 2-1 defeat at home to Horsham as Eddie Simon’s goal in the 52nd minute was nulled by Lucas Rodrigues’ winner late on. It was Simon’s fourth of the season in the league which sees him top the Angels’ scoring charts following a double against Farnborough with a single strike versus Enfield Town.

United come into the game off the back of their first league defeat since late August. Their six-game winning run in the Enterprise National League South was to put to an end by Eastbourne Borough on Saturday afternoon. A game that lacked a multitude of quality chances was ultimately decided by a gift as Freddie Carter was presented with the opportunity to tap in the game’s only goal from just yards out.
