Maidenhead United vs Torquay United
Match Preview
Our return to York Road sees us welcome Torquay United for our Salute to Services Day.
As part of our Remembrance Day commemorations, this fixture will be the club’s official Remembrance Day game, dedicated to recognising and honouring the contributions of our armed forces. There will be a short ceremony before the match, which includes a bugler performing a rendition of the Last Post.
2023 was the last time Saturday’s teams faced off against each other. The encounter, in the Vanarama National League, finished 3-1 to The Gulls as Aaron Jarvis’ opener and Frank Nouble’s double were enough to make Shawn McCoulsky’s late strike no more than a consolation. United were more successful in the return fixture six months prior, securing a 3-2 win with Remy Clerima’s winner on 95 minutes sending the incredible travelling fans delirious. Will Goodwin’s driven opener was cancelled out by a towering header from Emile Acquah in first half stoppage time – which would be the first of three scored after the 45-minute mark in the first half. Aaron Jarvis spun well to finish, before Charlee Adams’ penalty into the bottom left corner made sure the sides went in level. The game remained deadlocked until Remy Clerima’s cross, in second half stoppage time, towards Sam Barratt found the far corner and won it at the death.
In May 1987, Torquay were on the verge of losing their football league status, 2-0 down to Crewe Alexandra at half time on the final day. But a combination of Jim McNichol, Paul Dobson and a German Shepherd called Bryn saved the day in extraordinary fashion. McNichol scored a free kick to half the deficit, before he went out to take a corner in the latter stages. As he ran over to deliver the ball in, he confused the police dog who mistook him for a potential attacker on his handler. Bryn reacted and bit McNichol on the leg, causing a stoppage for treatment. In the added time that ensued, Dobson scored and Lincoln City were relegated on goal difference. The story of McNichol’s injury features in the Netflix documentary Losers.
After a couple of tough results against arguably two of the league’s strongest sides in Dorking Wanderers and Hornchurch, The Gulls bounced back in midweek. A professional 3-1 victory over Farnborough set them back on track, an early double from Louis Dennis and Jordan Dyer’s header with just under 20 to play ensured an eighth win of the season. Despite not notching during the week, Jordan Young appears to be the man to watch for Saturday’s visitors. With 10 goal contributions already this campaign, including seven in the last ten, the dynamic forward has found himself on the right flank most of the campaign but can offer quality centrally too.
United’s slump continues as the winless run was extended on Tuesday night, as AFC Totton ran out 2-1 winners. United looked better than they had in some of October’s fixtures, as they welcomed back Josh Umerah and Jordon Ragguette. However, Umerah’s converted penalty won by Ragguette wasn’t enough to bring any points back to Berkshire as United shipped two goals for the first time since August.
