Weston-super-Mare vs Maidenhead United
Match Preview
Our second away day of the season takes us to Somerset, more specifically, Weston-super-Mare AFC and The Optima Stadium.
Saturday’s opposition is one that Maidenhead became very familiar with in the late 2000s and early 2010s. The two sides enjoyed many a goal fest, including a 6-2 victory for United in 2014 in which Harry Pritchard was amongst the scorers, along with a fair few 0-0 draws.
United have scored three in their each of their last three meetings with Saturday’s hosts, the most recent of which was in October 2023 in the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round. It was a Tobi Sho-Silva hat-trick that ensured United progressed through, with a 3-0 win, to set up a First Round Proper tie against Oxford United.
The run also extends to two league wins over the Seagulls in the historic 2016/17 National League South campaign. The home fixture saw United win 3-0 with Dave Tarpey bagging a brace along with a goal from Kieron Forbes, while in the reverse tie United ran out 3-1 winners as Dave Tarpey again scored twice with Sean Marks also getting on the scoresheet.
Saturday’s destination is also home to the largest collection of helicopters in the world, with more than 80 rotorcraft housed in the old RAF base. The array, started in 1958, ranges from Soviet-era eastern European aircraft to old US Air Force models.
After narrowly missing out on the playoffs last season, Weston have notched four points on the board so far this campaign. Opening day defeat to Hornchurch was followed by a 0-0 draw against Chelmsford City. However, Weston did enjoy their victory of the season in midweek as they defeated Chippenham Town 2-1, William Dawes and Louis Britton scored either side of their host’s goal.
