Maidenhead United vs Weston-super-Mare

Match Preview

It’s Non-League Day at York Road and we welcome Weston-super-Mare for our ‘Football for a Fiver’ fixture.

The reverse fixture saw United suffer late heartbreak as Luke Skinner broke free of the United defence before firing into the top corner. It was a game of relatively few chances for either side, but United did agonisingly have a goal ruled out soon after the half hour mark. Josh Umerah swivelled in the area and struck across the six-yard box for Asher Yearwood to tap in, but the linesman’s flag cut short his celebrations. Liam Dulson and Louis Britton both had chances well held by the respective goalkeepers in the second 45, but Skinner’s late goal would be the decisive one.

There are just a handful of players to have played for both the Magpies and the Seagulls and just one of which that still play today. That one is last season’s top scorer, Shawn McCoulsky. He spent the early part of the 2016/17 on with Weston and enjoyed a rather prolific two months there, scoring seven in his 12 appearances. Five years later, he headed to Berkshire and would stay for four years. In that time, he accumulated 130 appearances and 32 goals, more than half of which came in his final season when he scored 17. Shawn now resides in League Two with Harrogate Town.
The next to have played for both is Manny Parry, who most recently played out of Hanworth Villa last season. The centre half joined Weston on loan from Stoke City in the earlier parts 2012/13, playing 11 times across both league and cup. Before he would then swap Somerset for Berkshire and appear twice in February of 2013. Manny would return to United in 2020 for more permanent, two-year stay amassing 54 games and three goals – all of which came in his first full season. Manny has since gone on to Southern UK Youth Scouting Manager at Manchester City FC.

The final player to have played for both is former forward Jake Reid. A physical presence up top, Reid played 43 times in black and white scoring 11 times. Having journeyed around a bit in his career, he finished his playing days with three campaigns at Weston. He made 38 appearances on the South Coast, scoring six times.

Weston come to York Road presenting another challenge as part of the playoff pushing pack. Currently eighth, just two points adrift but with two games in hand. More than staking their claim on a playoff potential, the Seagulls defeated Ebbsfleet 3-1 last weekend. They did, however, lose in midweek to Worthing with the Rebels coming from behind twice. With four different scorers across the five goal, the other being an own goal, the contributions are well distributed. Top scorer Louis Britton only featured for a minute in those fixtures but has registered 17 goals this season.

Ryan Peters continues his drive for those heavily competitive playoff spots, sitting fifth going into the game. A statement victory last weekend saw United overcome table toppers Dorking in a 2-0 victory. A fast break saw Dillon De Silva threaded through by Liam Dulson and give the Magpies the lead after 20 minutes. Dulson then took the other end of the stick as he made it two with a thunderous finish into the far top corner, throwing another goal of the season contender in the hat.
