Worthing vs Maidenhead United
Match Preview
Tough tests come thick and fast as we travel to Worthing this Tuesday night.
When we last crossed paths in early October, a first meeting in 20 years, a tightly-contested affair finished 1-0 to United. Liam Dulson struck after 22 minutes with the game’s only goal. Relentless pressure from Jayden Mitchell-Lawson won back possession before feeding Liam on the edge to strike into the top corner. It could have been two before the break, but efforts Josh Popoola and Remy Clerima were thwarted. Harry Ransom’s frustration late on resulted in him twice fouling substitute Corie Andrews; a yellow card for each and his marching orders were given.
Players journeying between United and The Rebels’ spot on the south coast is few and far between. However, one will be a name fresh in the minds of United fans following his cameo on Saturday afternoon. Maidstone United’s Ruben Carvalho has played for both after enjoying a loan spell with Worthing last campaign. Carvalho made 17 appearances scoring and assisting once as Worthing made the National League South playoffs. The young midfielder played 18 times for The Magpies finding himself on the scoresheet just the once, in a 3-0 victory over Taunton Town.
Another who has ventured between Berkshire and West Sussex, and a fair few other counties, in footballing journeyman Richard Pacquette. The forward spent the 2005/06 season with The Rebels scoring an impressive 17 in 30 appearances. He would then go on to join United on four separate occasions, initially on loan in 2008 before permanently for 2008/09. Another month spell in 2011 and then for the 2013/14 season, cumulating 84 games and 41 goals across that time.
It has been another impressive season for Worthing who have cemented themselves in and around the playoff and promotion spots for the majority of the season. Having spent time at the top of the tree, The Rebels currently sit third with just a six-point gap at the top. A difficult result at the weekend saw them ruing a chance to close the gap as Ricky Korboa nicked a late 1-0 win for Tonbridge Angels. Worthing do remain at the top of the charts in some capacity as young striker Brad Dolaghan sits first in the race for the golden boot with 21 this season. However, his involvement is questionable following his absence in the past two fixtures and the arrival of former EFL striker Callum Morton.
United have nudged themselves further into the playoff pack with a winning week in the past seven days. Home victories over AFC Totton and Maidstone United have pushed The Magpies into fifth but there is still very little to separate all the sides in close contention. Just three days prior to this one, a stoppage time Josh Popoola penalty maid sure it was three points. Remy Clerima nodded home after 20 minutes as he broke free from his man to connect with Popoola’s corner. Riley Court levelled it up with 18 minutes to go, volleying in from near on the penalty spot. In added time United probed for a winner as Alfie Pendlebury turned in the area before being wiped out. The man in the middle duly pointed to the spot and Popoola stepped up and had to watch as his penalty slowly bounced over the line after Holden got a hand to it.
