Maidenhead United vs Worthing
Match Preview
After almost a month, league football returns to York Road as we welcome the visit of Worthing.
It will be the first meeting between the two sides in more than 20 years, with the last clash coming in the Isthmian League Cup in 2004. Saturday’s visitors ran out 2-0 winners that afternoon with Mark Pulling and Mark Knee the scorers on the day. United’s last victory against the Rebels came in September 1998 when Michael Banton scored the game's only goal in an Isthmian League Division 1 matchup. The last home victory for Maidenhead came four years prior; Vernon Pratt was the scorer in what was another 1-0 league win.
Worthing is home to one of the oldest working cinemas in the UK, The Dome Cinema. Opened in 1911, it was originally named The Kursaal – a German word translating to “the cure hall”. Formerly a health and entertainment centre, it was renamed and repurposed following the outbreak of World War I. The Dome is now a Grade II listed building, granting it rigid protection following initial plans to redevelop the building. The location has since featured in the Netflix series Black Mirror with the lobby and screening area starring in the “Beyond the Sea” episode.
The Rebels come into the game with a rather varied run of results having two wins, two losses and a draw in their last five league outings. They have however seen a recent upturn in their scoring form with 10 goals in the same run of games, a tally massively helped by putting five past Dagenham & Redbridge. Worthing also secured progress through to the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup in their most recent fixture, beating Wimborne Town 3-0. Temi Babalola rounded off the scoring in that game continuing his run to make it seven goals in his last seven appearances.
United come into the game off the back of an extended break due to the elimination from the FA Cup. However, a chance at extending the five-game winning streak in the Enterprise National League is on the line and should provide plenty of motivation for Alan Devonshire’s side. The last time out United earned a 1-0 victory over Maidstone United, Matt Robinson volleyed home his first for the club which was enough to secure all three points on the road.
