Maidenhead United’s Men’s Over 50s Walking Football team were crowned champions of the Thames Valley Walking Football League Division 2 last Sunday [8th February 2026].
Echoing the success of the women’s team the previous week, Maidenhead United Over 50s cemented their title after a near-invincible run across the season.
The Magpies held a ten-point lead heading into the final day, needing only a win out of a possible four to finish top of the table. A single defeat in the final game of the season did not dampen spirits to cap off a remarkable campaign.
Manager Steve Brand said: “For many seasons Maidenhead United Walking Football Club's teams have been the whipping boys of the league and hovered around the lower divisions. This is mainly because we are a community team where winning is not the 'be all and end all'; it has been about enjoyment of the game and inclusion for everyone despite their abilities.
“This season it was decided that we would try to move out of that bracket and get some good results, with the addition of new players.
“To be crowned league winners has given a boost to the players and confidence to take this on further into next season.”
Adding that the team had “played exceptionally well and gained confidence as we went on,” Steve said: “I'm very proud of the boys who turn up once a month on a Sunday, rain or shine, at Bisham Abbey, to relive their youth. Who'd have thought that players would receive cups and medals for playing football in their older years?!”
Maidenhead United offers walking football for everyone, with a full list of options found here.
The Over 50s play twice a week at Braywick Leisure Centre from 1:30 to 2:30pm on Tuesday and Thursday. All are welcome regardless of age or ability, “as long as you can tie your shoelaces,” according to Steve. To join, email maidenheadunitedwfc@gmail.com today!
