Maidenhead United were saddened to hear of the recent passing of David James Woolley at the age of 83.
Dave was born in Stokenchurch on 24th June 1942 and attended Wooburn School where he played for the school team at right-wing. He joined Loudwater Boys Club before moving to Flackwell Heath when they were members of the Great Western Combination.
He moved to Maidenhead United the season after impressing for Flackwell in the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup between the sides in May 1963. He made his 1st team debut at York Road at Ilford in the FA Cup 4th qualifying round in October of that year and made nine appearances, scoring once. He remained at York Road until August 1970 winning Berks & Bucks Senior Cup winners medals in 1966 and 1970. He left for Marlow but returned to the club when Mike Hall was appointed Manager at York Road in 1973. His final 1st team appearance for Maidenhead was in October 1975.
Dave had many fond memories of his time at York Road, especially defeating Wycombe Wanderers in the semi-finals of the aforementioned County Cups. He also recalled the game against Edgware Town in April 1965 which Maidenhead won 6-2 and he and Bobby Hatt both scored a hat-trick of headers.
He worked all his life in Wycombe as a veneerer, hence his satisfaction at beating The Blues in any competition. He married Elaine in 1966 and had two sons, Simon and Stephen. In later years he and Elaine relocated to Cornwall.
Dave made 374 starting appearances as a Magpie, in addition to 30 as a substitute. He scored 69 goals for the club. His appearance record puts him into the top six of all time MUFC appearance makers and he will be inducted by supporters into the club’s Hall of Fame.
The thoughts of all connected with Maidenhead United are with Dave’s family at this sad time. His funeral will be held in the morning of the 4th November at Camborne Crematorium.
A minute of applause for the life of Dave Woolley will take place ahead of the Magpies Enterprise National League match at York Road with Tonbridge Angels on Tuesday 21st October.
