Dorking Wanderers vs Maidenhead United

Match Preview

It’s play-off time and we’ll be taking the midweek trip to Dorking Wanderers.

Our last clash with the Wanderers came just over a month ago as York Road hosted a 2-0 United victory. Dorking went close early on with Sam Pearson having the pick of the opportunities, but saw his effort pull wide of the target. With Dorking enjoying more of the ball, United broke forward dangerously on numerous occasions. Liam Dulson broke through a couple of lunges in the middle of the park before threading through to Dillon De Silva, who latched on and slotted cooly into the corner. A performance of exemplary defensive discipline, United’s back line continued to frustrate Dorking’s attacking threats. As we enteres the final quater of an hour, Liam Dulson, who provided an outlet all afternoon, secured the ball from Matt Robinson before shifting onto his right and rifling into the top corner to double the advantage. A delighted Bell Street End sung Ryan Peters’ side across the line for a statement three points.

Following the culmination of the regular season, Dorking secured themselves fourth spot. In and around the top of the table all season long, Marc White’s side have shown they have quality - especially when playing at Meadowbank. The Wanderers boast the best home record in the league, having only dropped points on six occasions all season (three draws and three losses). On the final day, Dorking took the trip to fellow play-off side Weston-super-Mare, playing out a 1-1 draw. Frank Vincent’s strike from range into the corner broke the deadlock before the break, but Luke Spokes equalised soon after the interval as he also found the net from outside the area. Goal-scoring midfielder Charlie Carter remains the man to watch as he tops the scoring charts for Dorking. On 11 for the season, Carter last netted against now champions Worthing at the start of April.

United locked in their spot in the play-offs on the final day as a point at Hornchurch was enough to secure seventh. A final day that could have ended in many ways for Ryan Peters’ men, ultimately earned a spot above that dotted line. It was not a game for the neutral as both the Urchins and the Magpies fought to secure their fate in the own hands, but neither side managed to do so in a game of few quality chances. Josh Umerah and Matt Robinson were the United players closest to breaking the deadlock, but Arthur Nasta dealt with both effectively. Dom Poleon went close for the hosts but a combination of Asher Yearwood and Jordi van Stappershoef cleared from off the line. Goalless it finished but a victory is how it felt amonst player, staff and supporters alike.

A trip to Torquay United on Saturday lunchtime (12:30pm KO) is the prize at hand on Wednesay night. On the other side of the bracket, Hemel Hempstead Town will host Weston-super-Mare on Tuesday evening with the victor heading to our host's last Saturday, Hornchurch. The winner of Saturday's two fixtures will then face each other a week later for a spot in the National League, hosted by the team that finished higher in the table at the end of the regular season.
