It was a night to forget for Maidenhead United as Altrincham scored four in the first half at the J. Davidson Stadium to secure all three points on Tuesday evening.

Alan Devonshire made two changes to the side which lost to Woking on New Year’s Day. Ricky Korboa made his debut in a Maidenhead shirt, while Remy Clerima returned to the starting XI after eight games out in all competitions.

The playoff-chasing hosts did not have to wait long to open the scoring. A looping cross field pass from Elliot Osborne to Tylor Golden allowed the Alty midfielder to find Alex Newby in the United penalty area, striking home first-time in the 8th minute.

The early opener fired some life into the United attack, leading to multiple chances for the following 20 minutes. Tyrese Dyce had the first opportunity to level the scores with his shot from a tight angle, but the 41-strong travelling faithful could only watch as his effort went agonisingly wide of the far post.

Reece Smith would have a similar opportunity with 25 minutes on the clock. His dinky effort towards goal left Ethan Ross caught in no man’s land expecting a second touch, but the ball had gone out of play by the time Tristan Abrahams could reach it. The lack of clinical finishes would soon come back to haunt Maidenhead, however, when Newby scored his second in the 26th minute from a pass to the edge of the box.

A second penalty against United in as many games gifted the Robins with a golden opportunity to secure their third. Craig Ross was deemed to have collected more of the man than the ball when he brought down Regan Linney in the penalty area. The striker wasted no time in converting his spot kick, and Alty led 3-0 with 33 minutes played.

There was a sense of déjà vu when Shawn McCoulsky became the latest Maidenhead player to see his shot drift wide of the right-hand post in the 38th minute. Unfortunately, the feeling of familiarity came back just seven minutes later when the hosts scored their fourth of the half. The two goal scorers linked up in the box, with Linney squaring to his strike mate to tap home and secure a first half hat-trick.

Half-time: Altrincham 4-0 Magpies

The second half began with yet another great opportunity in front of the Hale End terrace, albeit this time for the hosts. Joe Nuttall, fresh from the bench, headed towards goal only to be denied by Dyce’s goal line clearance.

While the latter 45 minutes may have been the quieter of the two halves, Maidenhead refused to throw in the towel despite the seemingly unreachable four-goal deficit. Smith forced a good save out of Ethan Ross with 20 minutes to go, with Sam Barratt’s rebound blocked before the Alty ‘keeper could get a glove on it.

Barratt would contribute to Maidenhead’s final opportunity of the game with a swooping free kick. Despite a well-delivered pass, the touch needed to flick the ball towards goal never came, and the Magpies would leave Greater Manchester empty handed for the second time this season.
