Report: Bizarre Bank Holiday Sees United Earn a Point

Maidenhead United were left frustrated at York Road as AFC Totton came from behind to claim a point in a 1-1 draw on Bank Holiday Monday. 

 

Ryan Peters made six changes to the side which travelled to Chelmsford two days prior. Miles Welch-Hayes and Manny Onariase returned to the defence, as did Jayden Mitchell-Lawson. Johsua Johnson started in the midfield, while Alfie Pendlebury and Connor Hall completed the attacking switches. 

 

The Magpies started brightly and were the better side for much of the opening period, moving the ball with purpose and causing problems in wide areas. 

 

Their early pressure was rewarded in the 26th minute when Miles Welch-Hayes delivered an excellent cross from the right, picking out Pendlebury at the far post. The forward made no mistake, heading home to give United a deserved lead. 

 

Maidenhead almost doubled their advantage just six minutes later. Jordon Ragguette produced another dangerous delivery into the area, with Pendlebury turning the ball against the foot of the post as the hosts searched for a second. 

 

The game’s major talking point arrived shortly afterwards. Coley looked to flick the ball on but caught the stooping Reece Fleet, leaving the Totton midfielder requiring treatment for a head injury. Referee Samuel Bragg deemed the challenge worthy of a straight red card, much to the disbelief of many around York Road. 

 

Despite the setback, the Magpies continued to look organised and disciplined, with the visitors struggling to create clear openings for much of the half. 

 

However, Totton found a way back into the contest deep into stoppage time. An attempted pass out from the back rebounded kindly into the path of Excellent Ikpeama, who finished low beyond Jordi van Stappershoef to level the score before the break. 

 

 

In unusual circumstances, both teams were then brought back out after the half-time whistle to play the final seconds of first-half stoppage time, before immediately changing ends for the start of the second period. 

 

With the numerical advantage, Totton saw more of the ball after the restart, but Maidenhead continued to compete well and remained a threat on the counter. 

 

Charlie Betts saw a couple of efforts deflected off target for the visitors, while another dangerous delivery into the Maidenhead box looped onto the top of the crossbar. 

 

At the other end, United continued to create the clearer opportunities. Mitchell-Lawson was denied by Ryan Gosney in the 71st minute after being played in down the left by Ragguette, before substitute Finley Welch fired against the outside of the stanchion following good work from Matty Achuba. 

 

Christian N’Guessan also went close late on, seeing a low effort well saved by Gosney as the Magpies pushed for a winner despite being a man light. However, the scores would remain level, and for the third time this season, United had to settle for a point at home.
