Report: Draw v Dorking as United Earn First Point of the Season

Maidenhead United earned their first point of the 2026/27 campaign on Saturday afternoon in a goalless draw at home to Dorking Wanderers. 

 

Ryan Peters made three changes to the side which started against Truro City the previous weekend. Joel Odeniran, Mathew Achuba and Alfie Pendlebury started in place of Miles Welch-Hayes, Finley Welch and Joshua Johnson. 

 

Dorking got the game underway, but it was United with the best chance in the opening minutes. A clever piece of footwork saw Jordon Ragguette beat his man on the left before charging down the flank. His cross found Pendlebury, who just couldn’t get a shot off as well as he’d have liked. 

 

The Wanderers responded with pressure of their own, and were only prevented by a crucial touch by Christian N’Guessan to poke the pass across the six-yard box clear. 

 

The main talking point of a largely uneventful first half was the foul by former Magpie Dawid Rogalski on Matty Achuba. The crunching challenge in the middle of the park saw vocal complaints from around York Road, but referee Joe Woolmer deemed the foul nothing more than a yellow card. 

 

As the half reached its conclusion, United won another free kick 30 yards out. Josh Coley took, offloading to Raggutte, but his effort was well wide. 

 

 

Dorking had an early opportunity in the second half, as James McShane headed just wide of the left post. Brennan Camp’s cross found its target man, with McShane missing the bottom left by inches. 

 

Another Dorking half-chance spurred United on the counter-attack, and this end-to-end encounter saw an increase in volatility, as Louie Annesley and Frank Vincent went into the book for fouls on Josh Umerah and Achuba respectively. 

 

Ryan Peters’ defensive additions made two brilliant blocks to keep the scores level. Joel Odeniran put his body on the line to deny McShane, with George Nikaj collecting the rebound. George Abbott got an outstretched leg to the shot, which Christian N’Guessan booted from danger. 

 

A lively second half concluded with five minutes of stoppage time. A late free kick from a crossing position came too close to Dorking ‘keeper Glenn Morris, while Josh Barrett almost found the crossbar down the other end with seconds to spare. Ultimately, the game finished goalless, with the result earning both sides their first point of the campaign.
