Maidenhead United Women saw their recent admirable form brought to an end by league leaders Moneyfields in their FAWNL match on Sunday afternoon, hosted at Ascot United.
An attritional first half saw United go toe-to-toe with Moneys in a first forty-five short on goalscoring chances. As the half wore on the visitors began to get on top and they opened the scoring eight minutes before the break. From a Moneys corner, United half cleared but were unusually slow in pressing the second ball which arrived at the feet of former Portsmouth player Tierney Scott to finish past Kenny Clarke at her near post.
A quick-fire double around the hour mark won this one for the south coast side who returned to the top of the table following Swindon Town’s fourteenth win from fifteen league matches earlier in the day. Firstly, a cross from the right was clinically finished at the near post by Sophia Phelps. Within two minutes the game was out of sight when Britt Jeal bundled the ball over the line from close range despite the best efforts of Kenny Clarke to keep the ball out of the net.
Manager Dave Kitson was in a philosophical mood speaking to Ian Waterhouse of FC Video post-match. “They are a good team, they are well coached” the former Premier League striker admitted. Despite the defeat Kitson was looking ahead to the future: “there is a huge amount (to be optimistic about)…we’ve got a cup final to look forward to against Ascot, another really good team.” With no game scheduled now until 8th March – ironically at Ascot in the FAWNL – and time to prepare ahead of big games Kitson added: “I said it to the girls the first day I came in the door, we will try to win every game we play. We might not (win every game)! But we will try to win every single game that we play. We’ll have different ways and means of doing that, we never set up for a draw.”
