Madison Blunden reports on MUWFC's dramatic draw with Marine Academy Plymouth.
Maidenhead United Women opened the afternoon with confidence and sharp intent, showing strong control in a challenging but sunny, breezy fixture against Marine Academy Plymouth.
The home side made impact instantly. With just a minute played, Izzy Stockton reacted fast inside the box, meeting a Katie Akerman corner with a clean, composed header to put MUWFC ahead. Maidenhead maintained their tempo, with Lynsey Preston, Chloe Webb and Megan Harper driving forward in waves. At the back, Charley Evans, Molly McKeever and Kody Cornish remained steady and calm under pressure, helping the team play through the thirds.
Marine Academy levelled in the 16th minute after a sharp passage of play created room inside the area for Ellie Bishop to score with a rising drive. Maidenhead answered with more pressure of their own, as Ackerman, Stockton and Webb combined neatly in attack, with Harper coming close from a well-constructed passage of play. The opposition however gained the lead in the 26th minute, Kayleigh Turner heading home from a corner.
A major turning point arrived on 34 minutes when MAP defender Eva Flitney committed a handball on the goal line, resulting in a penalty and a red card. Katie Ackerman stepped up confidently, firing the perfect shot home to send the match into half-time at 2–2.
The second half saw Maidenhead continue to build promising attacks and show strong determination across the pitch. Preston’s bursts of pace caused ongoing problems for MAP, whilst Ackerman delivered quality passes into dangerous areas. Opportunities kept coming as Katie Vince consistently supported attacks, overlapping and delivering several dangerous balls that stretched Plymouth’s back line.
Maidenhead also made smart changes to keep the momentum going, with Simone O’Brien coming on for Alex Dover to add fresh composure in midfield. Later in the half, Amelie Mayani replaced Megan Harper, and Sarah Sparrow entered for the impressive Katie Vince. Izzy Stockton threatened with multiple headers on goal, Aliyah Charles forced the keeper into action, and Lyndsey Preston struck the post during a lively stretch of play. MAP were awarded a free-kick soon after, but the shot flew over the bar.
Maidenhead pushed hard, with Stockton, Ackerman and McKeever all denied by the keeper in the closing minutes. Despite their pressure and teamwork, the breakthrough didn’t arrive. The match finished 2–2, reflecting a committed performance full of effort, connection, and determination from the squad.
