It was an intense derby day encounter at York Road on Sunday afternoon as Maidenhead United Women fell short in a 3-2 defeat against Ascot United Women. The home side started strongly, creating numerous early chances in front of a lively crowd, but were narrowly denied the win.
Maidenhead started the game on the front foot, with Megan Harper leading several quick breaks down the wing. The early pressure paid off in the 5th minute when Ines Cipriano buried the ball past the keeper with confidence, giving the Magpies a 1-0 lead. Maidenhead continued to press, with Katie Ackerman and Charley Evans working seamlessly to create attacking chances, forcing Ascot into several defensive clearances.
Ascot responded quickly in the 18th minute, a rebound following a shot on target allowed Ascot to equalise, bringing the score to 1-1. Despite this Maidenhead maintained high possession throughout the first half, continuing to create chances. In the 37th minute, Katie Ackerman curled the ball into the net, giving Maidenhead the lead once more and igniting the crowd. Chloe Chapman tested the Ascot goalkeeper on multiple occasions before the break, but the score remained 2-1 at half time.
The second half began with Ascot determined to respond, and just two minutes in, a well-placed header brought them level at 2-2. Maidenhead made their first change in the 65th minute, with Izzy Stockton replacing attacker Ines Cipriano. The game became a fast-paced, end to end battle, with both Maidenhead and Ascot showcasing strong defensive and attacking play. Maidenhead had several unfortunate near misses, including efforts from Megan Harper and Chloe Chapman. Ascot’s pace continued to test Maidenheads defence, but Molly McKeever was instrumental in making several crucial clearances.
Ascot eventually edged ahead in the 73rd minute with a composed finish that gave them a 3-2 lead. Simone Obrien made way for Sarah Sparrow in the 74th minute, after a series of strong tackles on the left wing. Later in the half, Maidenhead adjusted defensively, with Alex Dover replacing Chloe Webb at left back and Tarran Williams coming on for Katie Vince in the final moments of the game.
Maidenhead pushed relentlessly, gaining a series of corners and free kicks as well as testing the goalkeeper with a few on target efforts, however, were unable to find the equaliser. The final whistle confirmed a narrow 3-2 victory for Ascot. It was a match of high intensity, skill and commitment from both teams. Maidenhead United Women can take pride in their strong attacking play and defensive resilience but fell just short in a fiercely competitive match.
Maidenhead have another opportunity to impress the home crowd next Sunday afternoon 28th September when we entertain Chelsea Academy in the FAWNL Cup.
