Maidenhead United defeated AFC Totton 2-0 to reach the playoff places on Tuesday, 3rd March.
Maidenhead United made a bright start, something that was needed following their disappointing 1-0 defeat to bottom-of-the-league Chippenham Town the previous weekend. The home side looked determined to rectify that performance by moving the ball quicker and showing greater intent going forward.
The Magpies won their third corner within the opening six minutes and may have felt slightly unfortunate not to capitalise. Josh Umerah challenged for a deep cross from Josh Popoola, but the referee quickly blew for a foul on the goalkeeper, halting the early pressure.
Maidenhead’s strong start soon paid off as they grabbed an early goal. Liam Dulson did brilliantly on the edge of the box, using a clever roulette turn to glide past two defenders before squeezing a powerful effort goalwards with his weaker left foot. The shot fell kindly to top scorer Josh Umerah, whose close-range attempt was almost cleared off the line after a brave save from Totton goalkeeper Ryan Gosney.
Instructions continued to be bellowed from the dugout as Ryan Peters urged his side to maintain the early intensity and positivity while searching for a second goal within the opening quarter of an hour.
The Maidenhead defence limited any attacking threat from the visitors, keeping AFC Totton largely quiet during the early exchanges.
Dulson came close to doubling the Magpies’ advantage when Totton midfielder Charlie Osborne played a careless volleyed back pass towards his goalkeeper. Dulson pounced on the loose ball and rounded Gosney, but his effort lacked the power to beat Luke Hallett, who managed to clear the shot off the line.
The Magpies continued their sharp and aggressive press around the 25-minute mark. Centre-back Remy Clerima intercepted a pass into the Totton midfield nearly 30 yards from goal, further demonstrating Maidenhead’s control of the game.
A dazzling surge down the right flank from Jayden Mitchell-Lawson almost produced another dangerous opportunity. His low driven cross flashed across the penalty spot but drifted just behind Umerah before Totton were able to clear and regain possession.
Then came a moment of brilliance.
Maidenhead doubled their lead with just over five minutes remaining in the first half as Josh Popoola scored his eighth goal of the season and his first since December’s clash with Hampton & Richmond. The playmaker produced a superb slaloming run, shrugging off three defenders before unleashing a thunderous strike with his weaker left foot that flew into the top right corner, leaving Gosney with no chance.
Maidenhead deservedly led by two goals heading into the closing minutes of the first half as they looked to push themselves back into the play-off picture after their setback at the weekend. The Magpies’ best defensive record in the league was again on display as they effectively nullified any attacking threat from AFC Totton throughout the opening 45 minutes.
Half-time: Magpies 2-0 AFC Totton
The high-energy play continued in the early stages of the second half. Mitchell-Lawson once again delivered a low driven cross towards Dulson which eventually found Umerah. The striker used quick footwork to shift the ball onto his weaker foot, but his effort was well blocked by the Totton defence.
Mitchell-Lawson remained a constant threat and was again involved in a promising move. A clever one-two with Dulson resulted in a powerful effort from the forward that forced Gosney into a tremendous full-stretch save to keep the score at 2-0.
Maidenhead continued to create chances, particularly on the counterattack, as they looked to secure a crucial third goal.
Totton’s best opportunity of the match arrived when Christie Ward struck a volley from the edge of the box following a deep corner, forcing goalkeeper Jordi van Stappershoef into a sharp save down to his right.
Maidenhead immediately responded with a rapid counterattack. Dulson found himself one-on-one with Gosney but saw his effort smothered by the goalkeeper. The rebound fell to Jordan Ragguette, but his follow-up shot sailed over the bar.
There were loud shouts for a penalty when a floated cross from Popoola was flicked on by Clerima, only for captain Will de Havilland to be bundled over inside the six-yard box. However, the referee quickly waved away the appeals.
Totton showed signs of life when a misplaced header from de Havilland fell to Declan Rose, but his powerful strike was well saved by Gosney down to his left.
Despite trailing by two first-half goals, the visitors continued to probe the Maidenhead defence as the match approached the 80-minute mark.
Gosney produced another fine save late on, diving full stretch to his right to deny Dulson after the forward cut inside onto his favoured right foot from the left-hand side. The Totton goalkeeper kept his side in the contest with a series of impressive stops as the clock ticked down.
However, Maidenhead remained in control and looked set to secure another home win and clean sheet at York Road. The referee signalled five minutes of added time, but the Magpies’ two first-half goals ultimately proved decisive.
