Ten-man Maidenhead United produced a spirited comeback to secure a 2-1 victory over Hampton & Richmond Borough, overturning an early setback despite playing the majority of the match with ten men.

The home side were dealt a major blow just six minutes in when Manny Onariase was shown a straight red card after he bundled Daniel Nkrumah down in the box, who was through on goal. He forced the referee into making no other choice, and with more than 85 minutes still to play, Ryan Peters was made to make an early reshuffle.

Hampton capitalised on their numerical advantage just five minutes later. A sharp one-two between Nkrumah and Harry Gardner cut through the Maidenhead defence, allowing Gardner to calmly slot home and give the visitors an early lead.

Despite the setback, Maidenhead grew into the contest and looked particularly dangerous from set pieces. Will de Havilland came close to an equaliser following a scramble in the box, but Hampton managed to clear their lines.

The hosts were rewarded for their persistence in the 25th minute after Jayden Mitchell-Lawson was brought down by former Maidenhead captain Alan Massey. Josh Umerah had the responsibility to convert from the penalty spot, and did so confidently and calmly sending Marcus Dewhurst the wrong way to level the score. The striker’s fifteenth goal of the season shifted the momentum firmly in Maidenhead’s favour.

Belief had grown throughout the team by the equaliser, enabling the Magpies to get settled into their usual rhythm and began to impose themselves despite being a man down.

Hampton continued to threaten through the link-up play of Nkrumah and Gardner, but de Havilland produced a crucial interception to halt another dangerous move.

Maidenhead almost took the lead before the break when Matt Robinson won possession in his own half and had the luxury to see runners left and right and picked out Mitchell-Lawson in bags of space, but his effort was parried out by Dewhurst in the Hampton net and Umerah was unfortunate to capitalise on the rebound from close range.

Half-time: Magpies 1-1 Hampton & Richmond

The second half began with Maidenhead on the front foot, and Umerah came agonisingly close to his second goal with a curling free-kick that struck the post from 20 yards out with Dewhurst rooted to his spot. Clerima reacted quickest to the rebound but could only fire straight at Dewhurst, before the offside flag was raised.

Against the run of play, and just moments after Hampton made a double substitution, Maidenhead completed the turnaround with just over thirty minutes remaining. Mitchell-Lawson’s relentless pressing forced an error in the Hampton defence, and after driving into the box, he picked out Umerah, who clinically slotted home his second of the afternoon.

Hampton pushed for an equaliser late on, but Maidenhead’s resilience proved decisive. The ten men of Maidenhead hung onto their lead following a remarkable save from Jordi van Stappershoef who quickly moved his feet to get across his goal and fired a strong left hand following a powerful free header at the back post by their main attacking threat Daniel Nkrumah.

Substitute Alfie Pendlebury played a key role in the closing stages, providing a valuable outlet as Maidenhead absorbed pressure and looked to run down the clock.

Despite their early dismissal, Maidenhead delivered a disciplined and determined performance to secure all three points in impressive fashion. The huge three points the Magpies secured see them climb back into the playoff places with just three games remaining and just six points separating 3rd and 11th place.
