Report: Tinners the Winners in Opening Day Defeat for United

The opening day of Maidenhead United’s 2026/27 campaign ended in defeat in a 2-0 loss at Truro City on Saturday afternoon. 

 

Ryan Peters named a few of his summer signings to join the familiar faces in his first starting XI of the 2026/27 season. Christian N’Guessan, Josh Coley, and Joshua Johnson were among the starters who’d signed early on in the summer break, while trialists-turned-permanent additions Finley Welch and George Abbott made their debuts in a turquoise shirt. 

 

The season began with an early chance for Truro after Remy Clerima was booked in the first three minutes. Luke Jephcott curled the subsequent free kick off the woodwork and out of play for a goal kick. 

 

Tyler Harvey, albeit offside, also found the crossbar with an acrobatic effort a quarter of an hour in. Their best chance of the first 20 minutes came, however, when van Stappershoef misjudged a catch with Jack Stretton picking up the loose ball. His effort connected well with his foot, but also Will Dean who inadvertently deflected a guaranteed goal wide. 

 

Despite a short period of improved play from United, the Tinners looked more likely to open the scoring and eventually did after a blunder from van Stappershoef. The Magpies’ ‘keeper was unable to punch clear, and Harvey found the net with relative ease. 

 

It went from bad to worse for United a short while later as they were unable to deal with a corner. A miscommunication saw two United players, including the United GK, go for the same ball, leaving it to fall to Will Dean who tapped home the hosts’ second with half an hour played. 

 

Little changed for the remainder of the first half, as the visitors struggled to establish a presence on the game. City captain Connor Riley-Lowe flashed his effort across the face of goal prior to the half-time whistle, leaving United two down at the break. 

 

 

Peters’ changes and half-time team talk seemed to have a positive effect early, and United had the ball in the net five minutes on from the resumption of play. A great piece of play from Joshua Johnson found Umerah, who fired home to halve the deficit. However, referee Will Briers alleged a handball in the process, and the goal was not given. 

 

Aware of the deficit, United continued to create danger in the Truro area, and the most notable chance of the game up to that point came as Coley sought the top corner from a well struck set piece. Aidan Stone, kept largely inactive throughout the first half, made a fantastic save to deny the Magpies in the 68th minute. 

 

More debutants entered the field as Mathew Achuba and Connor Hall came on in the hope of rescuing a point. The pressure continued, with Umerah heading goal-bound from a Jayden Mitchell-Lawson cross only to find Ben Starkie in harm’s way, but ultimately United were unable to find the net and saw their opening day end in defeat against a newcomer to the division for the second season in a row.
