A packed York Road crowd knew what was required in the final home game of the season. A win would spark belief among the supporters that a play-off finish was within reach, especially given the Magpies’ superior goal difference compared to their play-off rivals.

Ryan Peters would have instructed his side to start on the front foot against a Dover side with little left to play for, knowing they were safe with games to spare.

Maidenhead began positively, putting the visitors under early pressure with a flurry of corners inside the opening ten minutes. Dillon De Silva, who started the match, tested second-choice goalkeeper Jordan Gillmore with a powerful effort from 20 yards, but it was comfortably gathered.

The hosts soon had another opportunity to excite the home crowd following a quick break. The ball was worked out to Mitchell-Lawson on the right, who picked out Popoola in the box. However, the forward, who is not known for his aerial ability, misjudged the flight and failed to make a clean connection, allowing Gillmore to remain untroubled.

A huge chance then went begging for the in-form Josh Umerah, who fired narrowly wide from just a few yards out after a superb cross from Jordan Ragguette was fired in from the left flank.

The opening stages of the half were full of promise for Maidenhead, but Dover gradually disrupted their momentum. The Magpies began to play at a slower tempo that suited the visitors, and there was a sense they needed to raise the intensity of their play heading into the second half, a feeling reflected throughout York Road.

However, signs of the earlier energy returned in the closing stages before the break, with De Silva producing the best effort after a well-worked passing move.

Half-time: Magpies 0-0 Dover Athletic

Maidenhead made the breakthrough early in the second half. Ryan Bartley scored his first goal for the club, sneaking in at the back post to poke home the opener after captain De Havilland had headed on Popoola’s free-kick.

The Magpies looked the more likely to add a second, but they were given a scare when Dover launched a rare attack. A cross into the box forced Van Stappershof into action, as he bravely came out and punched the ball under pressure, resulting in a nasty collision with the attacker. The ball then fell kindly to a Dover forward six yards out, who thought he had equalised, but the referee’s whistle came to Maidenhead’s rescue.

Van Stappershof was then called upon again and produced a moment of real quality. Despite having little to do for much of the afternoon, he delivered a crucial save, arguably even better than his heroics during the win against Hampton & Richmond in the previous home match. A thunderous volley from the edge of the box flew past a crowd of bodies, but the goalkeeper reacted superbly to spot it late and tip it over the bar.

Seven minutes of added time were signalled by the fourth official, setting up a tense finish at York Road. As the clock ticked down, the noise from the home supporters grew louder, urging their side on. Maidenhead managed the closing stages well, seeing out the game to secure a vital and perhaps season-defining three points.

Maidenhead did all that was required this afternoon, and that was to win. They did so hoping their play-off rivals would slip up, but results elsewhere did not go their way. With just one game remaining, the Magpies find themselves one point adrift of seventh, although their superior goal difference could yet prove decisive as they prepare to face title challengers Hornchurch away from home next Saturday.
