The Magpies Under 18s bowed out of the FA Youth Cup on Monday night after a comprehensive defeat inflicted by local rivals Slough Town at York Road, gaining a measure of revenge for a 3-0 defeat at Arbour Park at the same stage by Maidenhead three years before.

In front of a large and enthusiastic crowd, the visitors started the more likely of the two sides. Inside the first fifteen minute the first goal came when Frankie Phillips converted on the half volley. The visitors were wasteful in front of goal thereafter and a fumble by their goalkeeper Jeevan Pangali earned Maidenhead a corner which gave the young Magpies a way back into this tie. The flag kick caused havoc in the Slough defence and Joel Fenning turned the ball into the loose net from close range.

The Rebels were ahead again before the break, a matter of minutes after United equalised. It was a well-crafted goal, with Ben Bradley’s cross smartly headed in by Kian Berry. The lead was extended in the second period when Berry drove home the third just before the mid-point of the half, whereafter United played some of their most productive football, with Matteo Cedrola and Harry Ward both denied by excellent saves from Pangali.

The scoreline had extra gloss put on it deep into ten minutes of stoppage time when a well-worked move ended with a Maidenhead player inadvertently putting the ball into his own net.
