Saunders Given Special York Road Send-Off
Posted on 30th April 2025
An emphatic scoreline in favour of visitors Worthing on the final day of the FAWNL Division 1 South West season could not dampen the carnival atmosphere at York Road as Maidenhead United Women bade farewell to club legend Amy Saunders after 17 seasons with the club and more than 300 first team appearances.
In the 84th minute - with a young Maidenhead side trailing to a clinical hattrick from Tierney Scott for the visitors - the groud rose as one to give Saunders a deservedly rapturous reception as she came off the bench to replace Izzy Stockton, taking the captains armband one more time. Danielle Lane added a fourth goal for the visitors with a firm header from a corner but nothing could take the gloss off a day of celebration for someone who has been involved with MUWFC since day one.
After the match, there were speeches and tributes for Saunders in Stripes Bar, incuding video tributes from former coaches, team mates, friends and family. A number of gifts were presented to Amy, including a certificate confirming that the nuber 4 shirt at MUWFC has been retired in honour of Amy.
MUWFC finished 8th in their 12-team division, retaining their cherished status at Tier 4 of the women's pyramid by a comfortable margin of ten points, confirming an 11th consecutive campaign at this level for 2025/26 at the end of a season when the club picked up the Berks & Bucks Senior Women's Cup for the first time - a fitting tribute to the blood, sweat and tears shed by Saunders over 17 superb seasons.
